Tar Heels, Irish will play in women’s soccer final

The Spokesman-Review

Freshman Casey Nogueira broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 84th minute, helping North Carolina beat UCLA 2-0 Friday in the first game of the NCAA Women’s College Cup semifinals at Cary, N.C.

The top-seeded Tar Heels will play for their 18th national championship Sunday against second-seeded Notre Dame, which beat Florida State 2-1 in the second game.

Nogueira, a freshman, came off the bench to play extended minutes in relief of starter Elizabeth Guess, who was hobbled by a knee injury.

Nogueira scored from about 30 yards out after taking a pass from Yael Averbuch in front of the box on the left side and juking past a UCLA defender. Nogueira beat Bruins goalkeeper Valerie Henderson just inside the right post.

“Both games of the men’s NCAA soccer semifinals (UCLA-Virginia and UC Santa Barbara-Wake Forest) were postponed because of heavy snow and ice blanketing St. Louis, and will be played today.
