Eastern women fall to Davidson

The Spokesman-Review

There were some positive things for the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team Monday night at Reese Court in Cheney.

Unfortunately, one of them wasn’t a victory. Davidson used a late charge for a 67-58 win.

Sydney Benson led the scoring with 15 points for Eastern (4-7) and teammates Tara Holgate and Katy Baker each added 10.

Holgate also had four blocked shots to tie a season high for the Eagles.

“I thought our big kids did a nice job,” coach Wendy Schuller said. “Sydney and Tara both got into a little rhythm, rebounded well and defended well.”

Eastern had a six-point lead in the first half and stayed with Davidson (10-2) until the visitors took charge late.

Ferris grad Brynn Kelly had 10 points, one of three Wildcats in double figures, and seven rebounds.

“Turnovers and free throws were huge tonight,” Schuller said. EWU hit just 7 of 15 free throws and had 30 turnovers.

Whitworth, which had the best record in school history (11-1) and made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, is ranked ninth in the final D3football.com Top 25 poll for 2006.

Tight end Michael Allan was named to the D3football.com All-America first team, his third first-team All-America award.

Quarterback Joel Clark from Mt. Spokane was on the second team. He completed 167 of 272 passes for 2,576 yards and 20 touchdowns. Allan caught 53 for 1,100 yards and nine TDs.
