Bjorklund sets league scoring record

When Angie Bjorklund surpassed the Greater Spokane League high school basketball record for career scoring, she did it with flair.

The University High School four-year star made 13 of 14 shots, three of them 3-pointers, and added 11 rebounds during a 79-44 victory over winless Mt. Spokane on Dec. 19.

After last Thursday’s 74-29 win over Central Valley in which Bjorklund scored 23 more points, she has now scored 1,027 points in league games and is already at 228 this season with 11 games remaining. The single-season mark of 363 was set by Central Valley’s Emily Westerberg in 2003. She’s a senior two-time All-Pacific-10 player at Arizona State.

Westerberg also held the former career league record of 977, compiled during three seasons in 55 games. Bjorklund surpassed the record in her 57th GSL game.

She is averaging 25.3 points per game while teammate Dara Zack is averaging 16.0. Junior Justine Bowman leads CV with a 12.3 average.

University (8-1) is second in league behind unbeaten Lewis and Clark. The GSL resumes Friday when the Titans travel to East Valley.

The Knights are 4-4 in league and Central Valley is 3-6. Freeman is 6-2.

Boys teams improve

Playing most of the season without two injured seniors, Luke Clift and Chris Burdick, Central Valley boys basketball reached the holiday break with a 4-5 record.

Coach Rick Sloan wasn’t complaining.

“Our young kids are getting better,” he said. “I feel pretty good about it going into the break.”

During last Thursday’s comeback 68-56 win over University (2-7), sophomores played key roles early.

J.C. (Agen) and Willy (William Davis) hit some nice shots,” said Sloan. “And Mike (Williams) was tough in the second half.”

Sophomores Agen scored a career high 14 points, Davis was in double figures for the second straight game and Williams played perhaps his best game of the season with six points and as many rebounds.

Veterans Kevin Cameron (21 points) and Nick Ambrose (16) did most of their damage in the fourth quarter. They are averaging 14.1 and 16.9 points per game respectively for the year.

The Titans, too, are improving. In their last four games they nearly beat second-place Mead, won against Rogers, upset Mt. Spokane and led the Bears by eight points midway through the fourth quarter.

Junior Ryan Dixon matched his career high with 21 points and had a dozen rebounds. He’s averaging 11.6 points per game. Junior Trevor Wakem had his third double-figures performance. Sophomore Mason Johnson was held under double figures for the first time this year, but continues to lead the team in scoring with a 16.4 average.

The record doesn’t show it, but East Valley’s boys (1-7) have been competitive this year. They’ve been close in four of their losses, most recently to Mead. Junior Danny Marshall continues to lead in scoring with a 12.3 average.

Wrestlers take break

Spokane Valley wrestlers are taking a break before facing their toughest GSL matches. Beginning Wednesday, there will be numerous matches of interest.

University, Central Valley (both 4-0) and East Valley (3-0) cruised through the first part of the schedule undefeated.

The Knights and Bears face once-beaten Mt. Spokane and EV also wrestles Mead that first week back. And all three Valley teams still must wrestle each other before season’s end Jan. 25.

In league, four Bears wrestlers Tanner Teeples, Sam Neumann, Nick Cambron and Trevor Delmedico are unbeaten between 112 and 119 pounds. Jeff Croskrey is 3-0 at 140 and Jake Neumann and Tyler Cochran are perfect in the 189 and 215 pound classes.

EV’s Kyle Hunter is unbeaten at 112 and Knights Caleb Alvarado, Dakota Lawson, Clete Hanson, Dan Michalski, Jimmy Martin and Nick Weyrauch are unbeaten in league from 152 through 215.

U-Hi has wrestled 25 different competitors in its GSL matches so far. Brian Owen, Anthony Rivera and Casey Olsen have kept the 125 and 130 pound matches unbeaten, Elliott Nay is 3-0 at 140 and in the weights between 160 and 215 pounds RJ Daschbach, Greg Mitchell, Brandon Oakes and Billy McGlasson haven’t lost.

True to form

Gymnastics is running true to form, with both Central Valley and University among GSL contenders.

The Bears are tied with Mead at 3-0 and are 5-1 overall. U-Hi is a game behind in league counters, but also 5-1 overall.

Teams return to action Wednesday and conclude with the league meet Jan. 27 to determine the overall champion.
