Fast start lifts UCLA over WSU

UCLA used a 16-0 run in the first 7 minutes and cruised to a 77-50 win over Washington State in Pac-10 basketball action in Los Angeles Thursday.

The Cougars (7-15, 1-12) went on a 10-4 run to get within six points with 5 minutes left in the first half, but the Bruins (14-9, 9-5) quickly regained their 10-point lead. Noelle Quinn drilled a 3-pointer for UCLA to start the second half, and WSU never got within 12 points thereafter.

Lisa Willis paced the Bruins with 17 points, and Quinn and Nikki Blue each added 15. Keisha Moore recorded her third double-double of the season for the Cougars with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

WSU has dropped 14 of 15 games after starting the season 6-1.

MacKenzie Flynn scored a career-high 19, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and Idaho snapped a five-game losing streak with an 80-62 victory over San Jose State in Western Athletic Conference action in Moscow, Idaho.

The two teams swapped leads 11 times in the first half, but the Vandals (8-13, 4-6) closed the first half with a 17-4 run to gain a nine-point lead. Idaho extended the lead to 17 early in the second half, and the Spartans (10-10, 5-4) never got within 10 points.

Emily Faurholt scored 17, Leilani Mitchell 15 and Jessica Summers 14 for Idaho. The Vandals held a 22-9 advantage in free throws made.

Cameo Hicks scored 25 points in Washington’s 87-79 double-overtime Pac-10 win over Southern California in Los Angeles. The Huskies (16-6, 9-4) outscored the Trojans 11-3 in the second overtime.
