Region 4 4A

Dates and site: Friday 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. at Walla Walla High School.

Last year’s finish: University, Pasco, Eastmont.

At stake: Three berths per weight to Mat Classic.

Returning champions: Brian Owen (U-Hi), so., 112; Lucas Chesher (CV), sr., 140; Tim Whitley (Wenatchee), sr., 135; Jordan Anderson (Kamiakin), jr., 145; Nick Zumwalt (U-Hi), sr., 171; Paul Senescall (Mead), sr., 215.

Outlook: With a 25 percent reduction in state berths and expected Mid-Valley improvement, competition will be spirited. “Regionals is so tough this year with only three going. (But) we have some really top-level kids who could be state champs.” – Don Owen, U-Hi.

Region 4 3A

Dates and site: Saturday, 10 a.m. at Wapato High School.

Last year’s finish: East Valley, W.F. West (Chehalis), Sunnyside.

At stake: Four berths per weight to Mat Classic.

Returning champions: Isaac Romero (Sunnyside), so., 103; Jacob Tarvin (River Ridge), sr., 130; Jason Fairley (Clarkston), sr., 140; John Capen (Chehalis), jr.,171; Erich Schmidtke (Aberdeen), so., 171; Tyler Jolley (EV), sr., 275.

Outlook: Last year the GSL/Mid-Valley subregion took 36 of 56 state berths against Pacific-9 League schools. EV (11 wrestlers) and W.F. West are favored. Eighteen state qualifiers are in the field, including three each at 112, 140 and a loaded 171 pounds. “That is the weight class – 171 is the toughest, without question. But I believe we can win the region and believe we have 11 shots at getting through.” – Craig Hanson, EV.

Region 3-4 2A

Dates and site: Friday 5:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. at Moses Lake High School.

Last year’s finish: new meet.

At stake: Seven berths per weight to Mat Classic.

Outlook: With the increased number of available state berths, there’s a wealth of opportunity for Great Northern League wrestlers but a lot of talent to wade through in this 12-wrestler bracket matchup. There are three CWAC unbeatens plus several others with one or two losses. “There some state places we don’t have (because of injury and moves). If we get 10 or 11 to state, that’s how going to win it.” – Scott Jones, Lakeside.

Region 4 1A/B

Dates and site: Friday 4:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. at Lake Roosevelt High School in Coulee Dam.

Last year’s finish: Oroville, Newport, Liberty Bell.

At stake: Six per weight to state.

Returning champions: Matt Carroll (Tonasket), sr., 112; Eric Moody (Newport), jr., 125; Adam Thies (Liberty), jr., 135; Maverick Port (Liberty Bell), sr., 152; Ryan Anderson (Tonasket), sr. 189,

Outlook: District 7 has eight wrestlers and District 6 four per weight in the regional, so state prospects are good. Forty-nine state qualifiers are in the field, with 26 from District 7 including returning state champs Danny Mathews, Freeman; Jeff Jordan and Josh Campbell, Colfax; and Seth Schertenleib, Republic.
