O’Reilly sets mark; Cosby also shines

Megan O’Reilly, a senior at Mt. Spokane High School, set a national high school record in the indoor 5,000-meter run on Saturday at The Husky Classic in Seattle.

O’Reilly finished with a time of 16 minutes, 26.37 seconds and placed 11th in a race among college athletes.

The old record was set by Brianna Jackucewicz in 2004 with a time of 16:43.02.

Robert Cosby of Ferris High finished third in the Gerry Lindgren 5,000-meter run.

Cosby finished in 15:02.64, the eighth-fastest time for a high school boy, and qualified for the Nike Team National Indoor Meet in in March.

Also at the meet, University of Washington runner Austin Abbott became just the third Husky to run a sub-4-minute mile. Abbott clocked a 3:59.47 to finish fourth.

A pair of Washington State University women earned second-place marks – Julie Pickler in the high jump (5 feet, 8¾ inches) and Sarah Burns in the triple jump (40-3½).

Eastern Washington’s John Timues set a school record in a 17th-place finish in the men’s 5,000 with a time of 14:08.72. David Paul placed second in the men’s weight throw (63-1¼).

WSU’s James McSwain led a 1-2-3-6 finish in the men’s 60-meter dash at the Holiday Inn Team Invite in Nampa, Idaho.

McSwain clocked a 6.83. He was followed by Jaycee Robertson (6.85), Justin Woods (6.95) and Brian Woods (7.05).

WSU’s LaShawnda Porter won the women’s 200 (24.65), while teammate Nicole Hatcher was second in the 60 (7.76).

Baseball

Jackson Brennan drove in three runs with a pair of hits and the Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-1) rolled to their fifth straight victory with a 5-1 win over the Nevada Wolf Pack at the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic in Sunrise, Ariz.

Nick Ison tossed five shutout innings in relief as the Washington State Cougars (2-1) beat host Charleston Southern 9-5 at the Buccaneer Baseball Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Swimming

The Whitworth men lead and the Whitworth women sit in second after the second day of the three-day Northwest Conference Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Wrestling

North Idaho College had seven claim individual title and the Cardinals breezed to the team title at the Region 18 championships in Coos Bay, Ore.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Flyers hit the road and shut out Bozeman 2-0 in NPHL play.

Nelson knocked off the Spokane Braves 5-2 in KIJHL play at Planet Ice.
