Morgan wins Red Rock Invite
Mary Kate Morgan has made Gonzaga history.
Morgan became the first GU women’s golfer to win a major tournament Sunday when she shot an even-par 72 to win the Red Rock Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.
Morgan finished with a 4-over-par 148 to defeat first-round leader Sophia Choi of Northern Arizona by two strokes. Choi shot a 76 Sunday.
NAU and Texas-El Paso shared the team title at 623, a six-shot victory over Portland State. Gonzaga tied Grand Canyon for ninth at 658.
Baseball
Zach McAngus hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth inning as Washington State overturned a four-run deficit and beat San Francisco 7-6 to win the River City Classic in Davis, Calif.
Jay Miller went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs for WSU (10-2), which went 4-0 in the tournament. USF fell to 4-9 overall.
•Kyle Conley’s second home run of the afternoon – a two-out, two-run shot in the seventh – snapped a 5-5 tie as Washington (8-2) scored four times in the seventh inning to beat Gonzaga 7-5 and earn a sweep of the three-game series in Seattle.
Second baseman Scott Campbell went 4 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and an RBI for Gonzaga (7-6).
•Whitworth dropped a pair of games Sunday, falling to Albertson 11-3 and Lewis-Clark State 11-2 in Lewiston.
Luke Howarth went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and Dane McGrady 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Albertson (9-1) in the first game. Whitworth’s Todd Phillips was 2 for 3 against Albertson.
In the second game, D.J. Kooken went 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for Lewis-Clark State. Whitworth (3-6) was led by Danny Pecka, who went 2 for 4.
Basketball
Despite a 20-7 overall record and a second place finish in the Northwest Conference, Whitworth was not picked for one of 18 at-large bids into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Junior hockey
Beaver Valley scored twice in the third period and knocked off the Spokane Braves 4-3 to sweep their Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoff series 4-0 at Planet Ice.
Evan Witt, Andrew Kawcyznski and Leif Sherman scored for the Braves. Sherman played his final game with the team due to age restrictions.
