Two men die, teen hurt after head-on crash

Associated Press

SULTAN, Wash. – Two minivans crashed on U.S. 2, the Stevens Pass Highway, leaving two men dead and a teenage boy injured and closing the road for about three hours near this Snohomish County town, investigators said.

A 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Roy B. Griffin, 76, of Gold Bar crossed the center line Monday and collided head-on with a 1987 GMC van driven by Richard M. Montgomery, 56, of Monroe, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

Both drivers died and a passenger in Montgomery’s van, William C. Wicker, 17, of Monroe, was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, trooper Keith A. Leary said.

There was no indication that alcohol or other drugs were involved, troopers were unable to locate witnesses who could describe how the vans were being driven before the crash, and the cause of the collision remained under investigation, Leary said.
