Sonics send Moore to Nets for draft pick

The Spokesman-Review

The Seattle SuperSonics traded center Mikki Moore to the New Jersey Nets on Thursday for a second-round pick in the 2009 draft.

Moore played in 47 games last season, his first with the Sonics, but became expendable after Seattle drafted 7-footer Mouhamed Sene with the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft. The inexperienced, 20-year-old Sene was thought to be headed for the NBA Development League at the start of next season, but general manager Rick Sund said Sene played “surprisingly well” for the Sonics’ summer league team.

Seattle coach Bob Hill said his preference is to have Sene begin the upcoming season with the Sonics, instead of in the D-League.

Devils re-sign Gomez

The New Jersey Devils re-signed Scott Gomez to a one-year, $5 million contract, ending speculation that the team would be unable to fit the 26-year-old forward’s contract under the NHL’s salary cap.

Gomez was awarded $5 million by an arbitrator on Tuesday. In six seasons with the Devils, Gomez has 103 goals and 287 assists.

“Defenseman Toni Lydman and forward Jason Pominville avoided arbitration and agreed to long-term deals with the Buffalo Sabres.

Lydman agreed to a four-year, $11.5 million deal shortly before his arbitration hearing was scheduled to begin, the NHL Players Association said in an e-mail to the Associated Press. Pominville, whose hearing was scheduled for today, agreed to a three-year, $3.1 million contract, the team said.

“A federal judge threw out an appeal by former St. Louis Blues player Mike Danton, rejecting Danton’s latest attempt to be allowed to transfer to his native Canada to serve out a prison sentence for a failed attempt to have his agent killed.

Last Thursday’s ruling assures that Danton remains an inmate at a prison in Fort Dix, N.J.
