Tunisia 2, Saudi Arabia 2

Highlights

Two game-changing injury-time goals highlighted the sixth day of play. Oliver Neuville brought the host country to its feet when he scored on a sliding kick off a brilliant cross from David Odonkor to give Germany a win. Tunisia’s Radhi Jaidi scored in added time to give Tunisia a tie against Saudi Arabia.

Spain spoiled Ukraine’s World Cup debut with two goals in each half, including a fine team effort on the fourth tally.

Stars

“David Villa, Spain, scored two goals, including one penalty kick, in the rout of Ukraine.

“Oliver Neuville, Germany, scored the winner against Poland in injury time.

“Radhi Jaidi, Tunisia, also scored in injury time to rally his team to a tie with Saudi Arabia.

History

Spain’s David Villa converted the tournament’s first penalty kick goal in the 48th minute of his team’s rout of Ukraine. Swiss referee Massimo Busacca awarded Spain the dubious spot kick for a foul committed by Vladyslav Vashchuk that looked like it took place outside the box. It was the 15th match of the tournament, and the first penalty whistled.

The 2006 tournament, however, will not go down as the one with the longest drought before the first penalty-kick goal. In 1974, the first 20 matches of group play went by without a goal from the penalty spot. On the last day of group play, four games kicked off at the same time and the Netherlands’ Johan Neeskens scored twice on penalty kicks in a 4-1 rout of Bulgaria.

Today

Sweden looks to rebound from its 0-0 tie against 10-man Trinidad and Tobago in its opener when it faces Paraguay in Berlin tonight. Also, Ecuador plays Costa Rica and England plays Trinidad and Tobago.
