Ferris’ Alec Petrie to advise school board

Rachae Mason, a junior at North Central High School, and Alec Petrie, a junior at Ferris, were recently selected by the Spokane Public Schools board to serve as advisers to the board next school year.

The two will be nonvoting members of the board, and will give students’ perspective to board discussions. Their term begins in August.

Mason is active in student government, the Inter-High Council and was instrumental in developing NC’s Link Crew program for mentoring freshmen.

Petrie has been a member of the Spokane Area Swimming team for seven years, plays in the Ferris band and takes a rigorous course load.

Mock trial

Lewis and Clark High School Legal Studies classes prevailed over Shadle Park in the semiannual Mock Trial Competition last Thursday at the Gonzaga Law School.

Acting as attorneys for LC this semester were Emily Cross, Benjamin Price and Gary Padrta.

The judge was local attorney Matt Sanger.

Local attorneys Kammi Mencke and Larry Vance consulted with the LC and Shadle Legal Studies classes in preparation for the trial.

St. George’s honoree

Mackenzie Trail, a graduating senior at St. George’s School, has been recognized as one of the top 100 high school choral musicians in the country.

The All-USA High School Musicians recognizes the top high school-age musicians from across the nation for their commitment to excellence in music, academics and society.

Neil Kempen cited

Gonzaga Prep teacher Neil Kempen was awarded the Catholic Service Award by the Catholic Foundation of Spokane on June 8.

Kempen has been the director of the Community Service Program at Prep since 1978 and faculty moderator of the Knight of the Leash, a boys’ service club, for 25 years. He coaches junior varsity boys tennis and has been the tennis coach for 23 years.

Murphys honored

Since 1963, Gonzaga Prep has given its highest honor, the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal, to a person who has given outstanding service to secondary education and to Gonzaga Prep.

This year’s recipients are Dan and Joyce Murphy.

The Murphy family has been associated with Prep since the 1920s.
