Tricycle race will benefit Cancer Patient Care

Ladies and gentlemen, tune up your trikes (or show up with your three-wheelers rusty and rickety).

Big Sky Tavern’s fifth annual tricycle race, the “Skytona Mini 500,” is scheduled for Saturday. The races begin at 2 p.m. in the tavern’s parking lot, 5510 N. Market St. A bar will be set up outside. Pop, lemonade and food also will be available. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day.

All money from sponsor fees, raffles and entry fees will be donated to Cancer Patient Care. Nancy Hefling of the event committee said the goal is to reach $2,000.

Because of its growing popularity, there will be five classes this year: Stock, modified, powder puff, over-the-hill (50+) and the pit crew race. First-place trophies and second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded.

Participants must be 21 to enter and can sign up at the tavern before Saturday or the day of the races. The entry fee is $10, which pays for one driver.

A complete list of rules is available at the tavern, including the rule of “no lubricating other driver’s handlebars.” As lore has it, one year, someone slathered hand lotion on competitors’ trikes, making it difficult for them to remain in control of their ride.

There will be a half-time race held for anyone with a remote-control car and live music in the evening.
