Two concerts scheduled at St. John’s Cathedral

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is presenting two concerts this week.

“ The first event, Swing in the Cathedral, will benefit Catholic Charities.

Tuxedo Junction, an 18-piece swing band composed of Spokane and Coeur d’Alene musicians, will perform Friday at 7 p.m. at the cathedral.

Tickets are $10, available through TicketsWest outlets (325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com); St. John’s, 838-4277; Catholic Charities, 358-4250; or at the door.

“ The second concert is the musical group Sidhe, which includes guitarist Michael Millham and his wife, soprano Keleren Millham, Sunday at 4 p.m.

The two will perform music from 250 years of musical traditions.

The cathedral also will offer its “Open Door” hours on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors are invited to explore the grounds and the interior of St. John’s.

Children’s chorus

Westminster Congregational Church, 411 S. Washington St., is presenting the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus Spring Concert Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

“Simple Songs” will be performed by the five choirs of the chorus and will feature guests from the Spokane Youth Orchestra.

Tickets are $5 in advance for main floor general admission, $6 for reserved balcony seats; at the door they are $7 and $8.

Soprano recital

Deanna Lynn Davis, a lifetime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will perform a recital at the church Friday at 7 p.m.

Davis is a graduate of Ferris High School and attends Western Washington University. She and her piano instructor, Carol Miyamoto, will perform selections from Handel, Schubert, Chausson and more.

Admission is free, but Davis will accept donations to help meet expenses related to a WWU concert tour she will make this summer.

Reader’s theater production

The West Central Ministry Players will perform “Over the River and Through the Woods,” a reader’s theater comedy Sunday at 2 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway Ave.

Proceeds will benefit Our Place Ministries in the West Central Neighborhood.

Admission is $15, which includes a refreshment buffet. There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door, so reservations are recommended.

Longtime church members honored

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave., is honoring 21 congregants who have been a part of the church for 50 years or more.

The members will be honored Sunday during the 10:30 worship service.

Garage sale fundraiser

Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 4320 S. Conklin St., is holding a garage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity-Spokane.

Items for sale include outdoor barbecues, tools, furniture, clothing, toys and an office copier.

There will also be a bake sale with cookies, brownies and cakes.

Sunny Sundays, a group for widows and single women at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., is holding a May luncheon Sunday at 1 p.m. in the parish hall.

Spiritual cinema

The Unity Center, 4123 E. Lincoln Road, is showing the film, “Touching Wild Horses,” starring Jane Seymour, on Friday at 7 p.m.

The film is about a writer who lives on an island preserve for horses whose nephew unexpectedly comes to live with her.

Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted.

The church is also offering “A Course in Miracles,” a study group that meets Sunday at noon.

Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E. 30th Ave., is presenting Roger Marriott Wednesday.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a potluck dinner, and Marriott will speak at 7 about his mission that serves the K’ekchi of Guatemala.
