Devils trade Malakhov to Sharks

The Spokesman-Review

The New Jersey Devils made a major move to get under the NHL salary cap Sunday by sending suspended defenseman Vladimir Malakhov and a conditional first-round draft pick to San Jose for defenseman Jim Fahey and the rights to left wing Alexander Korolyuk.

The deal will save the Devils $3.6 million on their cap – Malakhov’s salary – and it probably won’t cost New Jersey much because Korolyuk will play in Russia again this season and Fahey might not make the roster.

Doping

Tests prone to error

Even athletes who take approved substances risk failing doping tests, experts said in Lausanne, Switzerland, citing a recent study that found banned steroids in nutritional supplements and vitamins.

“The situation in the nutritional supplement market has worsened and the risk of inadvertent doping is increasing,” said Hans Geyer, a researcher at the Cologne Doping Control Laboratory in Germany.

•Anti-doping laboratories are working on a test to detect a powder used to destroy traces of the performance-enhancer EPO in urine samples.

Martial Saugy, the head of the Swiss anti-doping laboratory, said there have been suspicious tests within the last year in which not even traces of natural EPO produced in the kidney is present.
