Manning leads Colts to wild win

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Justin Miller’s 103-yard kickoff return was the quick score the New York Jets needed. Only problem: It left Peyton Manning with one last chance and plenty of time.

After Miller’s dash gave New York the lead with 2:20 left, Manning led Indianapolis on the type of efficient drive that has defined his career – capping it with a 1-yard run that gave the Colts a wild 31-28 victory Sunday.

Manning was 6 of 8 for 60 yards on the drive, including a 19-yard pass to Marvin Harrison and a 15-yarder to Reggie Wayne that put the ball at the 1. Running the no-huddle offense, Manning then took the ball and pushed himself into the end zone.

With 8 seconds left, the Jets got off one last, desperate circus play, a never-ending lateral-fest that almost worked.

Browns 24, Raiders 21: At Oakland, Calif., Charlie Frye threw three touchdown passes and Cleveland used three long returns to rally from an early 18-point deficit and emerged victorious over Oakland.

Frye did his work with TD passes to Kellen Winslow and Joe Jurevicius in the third quarter to win his third game for Cleveland.

Texans 17, Dolphins 15: At Houston, Mario Williams tipped a two-point conversion that would have tied the game and finally got his first sack as Houston beat Miami.

The Dolphins trailed 17-9 when Daunte Culpepper found Chris Chambers for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:39 to go to pull within two. Miami went for the 2-point conversion, but the pass by running back Ronnie Brown was tipped by Williams.

Culpepper was 23 of 39 for 249 yards and a touchdown.

Bills 17, Vikings 12: At Orchard Park, N.Y., J.P. Losman passed for 222 yards and a touchdown and set up another score with a 15-yard scramble to help Buffalo beat Minnesota.

The Vikings threatened on their final drive – getting as far as the Bills’ 16-yard line – but with no timeouts left, Vikings receiver Billy McMullen failed to get out of bounds and the clock simply ran out on Minnesota.

Falcons 32, Cardinals 10: At Atlanta, DeAngelo Hall returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown, Jerious Norwood broke off a 78-yard scoring run and 46-year-old Morten Andersen kicked five field goals in Atlanta’s victory over Arizona.

Vick had his second 100-yard rushing game of the season and seventh of his career.

Cowboys 45, Titans 14: At Nashville, Tenn., Drew Bledsoe and Terry Glenn hooked up on two 13-yard touchdown passes and Dallas went on to beat Tennessee.

Terrel Owens did indeed play with his broken right hand protected by a plate and a glove only five days after his hospital visit for an accidental overdose. He caught five passes for 88 yards but also dropped a pass in the end zone he couldn’t pull in with his injured hand.

Chiefs 41, 49ers 0: At Kansas City, Mo., Damon Huard played almost flawlessly in a rout of San Francisco, hitting 13 of his first 15 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns while Kansas City seized a 24-0 halftime lead en route to its first shutout in almost four years.

Huard hit 18 of 23 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns.

Redskins 36, Jaguars 30: At Landover, M.D., After blowing two fourth-quarter leads, the Redskins won the toss at the start of overtime and needed only three plays to score.

Mark Brunell found Santana Moss near the sideline – Moss leaped between two defenders to catch the 68-yard touchdown pass 1:49 into overtime. The play had to be reviewed to make sure the receiver didn’t step out of bounds.

Brunell went 18 for 30 for 329 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Panther 21, Saints 18: At Charlotte, N.C., Jake Delhomme threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Drew Carter midway through the fourth quarter to put Carolina ahead to stay as they handed New Orleans its first loss of the season.

Drew Brees was 28 of 38 for 349 yards and a touchdown, Marques Colston had five catches for 132 yards and Joe Horn had five catches for 63 yards. But the Saints had just 63 yards rushing.

Rams 41, Lions 34: At St. Louis, Isaac Bruce caught a 5-yard touchdown pass with 1:56 to play as St. Louis rallied to beat Detroit.

Trailing 34-33 with 4:42 to play, the Rams got the ball and marched 56 yards in seven plays, scoring when Marc Bulger threw to Bruce, who wriggled into the end zone for his first touchdown of the season.

Bulger and Bruce then connected on a 2-point conversion.
