UCLA edges GU women

The Gonzaga University women’s soccer team fell to fifth-ranked UCLA 1-0 on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Bulldogs (6-5-1) held the Bruins (9-2-0) scoreless until 37 seconds into the second half when UCLA’s Lauren Cheney took a cross from Lauren Switzer before heading it in for the lone goal of the game.

The Zags were outshot 15-2.

“Greta Thibodeau’s goal in the 73rd minute lifted Whitworth to a 1-1 draw with visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer match in Spokane. Puget Sound (5-1-3) scored in the ninth minute and the Pirates (6-1-2) didn’t match that until Thibodeau scored late. The game went to two overtimes without either team getting a serious attempt on goal.

Mens soccer

The No. 4 ranked Washington Husky men’s soccer team was upset by San Diego State 1-0 in San Diego, the second straight loss for the Huskies (8-2-0, 1-2-0 Pac-10). Washington was out shot 15-11 by the Aztecs (7-3-1, 3-1-0) who played nearly the entire game with 10 players after Nick Clemens was issued a red card in the 15th minute.

“The Whitworth men played to a scoreless tie with Puget Sound in Spokane. The Pirates (4-3-3, 3-1-2 NWC) out shot Puget Sound (6-0-1, 3-0-1) 13-11 but were unable to score after two overtime periods. Kevin Bostock had four saves for the Pirates.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves beat Grand Forks 8-2 at Eagles in Spokane. Conner Olstad and Johnny Clark each scored two goals for Spokane which is now 6-4-1.
