13-year-old accused of stabbing 12-year-old

The Spokesman-Review

A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault Wednesday after stabbing a 12-year-old Spokane Valley boy in the shoulder with a pocket knife, police said.

The two boys got in a fight over name calling, said Sgt. Dave Reagan, a spokesman for Spokane Valley police.

The 12-year-old’s stab wound did not require hospitalization, Reagan said. The 13-year-old was booked into Spokane County Juvenile Detention.

Officers were called to the 4500 block of East 15th about 7 p.m. Wednesday after the 12-year-old told his mother he’d been stabbed, Reagan said. The boy told police that the 13-year-old and two other boys were calling female friends of his names. He said he finally told the three to stop.

The suspect approached the 12-year-old and swung at his head, but the victim ducked the punch and threw his own, striking the suspect in the head, Reagan said, and the 13-year-old then pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the victim in the shoulder.

Air quality rated poor due to smoke in area

The Inland Northwest’s air quality remained poor Thursday due to smoke in the area.

Low level winds were light and kept smoke in the area from being dispersed, officials said.

Spokane’s air quality improved to moderate Thursday from unhealthy a day earlier, but the Spokane County Air Pollution Control Authority kept warnings in effect for people who suffer from respiratory problems.

Air quality was poor in Boundary, Bonner and Shoshone counties, according to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. The air quality was expected to improve today.

Burn bans remained in effect of Spokane, Kootenai and Benewah counties.

Man cleared in robbery allegedly fought police

Police said Thursday that a man who looked like one of two suspects in a downtown motel robbery was cleared in that case but still was arrested when he fought with officers.

Kelvin Wayne Veazie, 45, was booked on suspicion of obstructing officers and meth possession.

Officers said he popped something into his mouth and began chewing when they approached. Then he allegedly began fighting.

Police said the man resembled a suspect who apparently had a gun tucked into his waistband when he and an accomplice took an undisclosed amount of cash from the Econo-Lodge motel at 120 W. Third Ave. about 12:30 p.m.
