Falcons surprise Panthers

John Abraham had two sacks and forced two fumbles in his first game with Atlanta, while Michael Vick threw two touchdown passes and the Atlanta Falcons 20-6 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, N.C.

Warrick Dunn rushed for 132 yards for Atlanta, who had 252 on the ground in all, the second most allowed ever by Carolina.

Keyshawn Johnson had only four catches for 40 yards and Jake Delhomme was 21 of 36 for 186 yards and an interception for Carolina.

Patriots 19, Bills 17: At Foxborough, Mass., New England came back from a 17-7 halftime deficit to defeat Buffalo. The comeback was capped off in the fourth quarter when J.P. Losman was sacked for a safety by Ty Warren.

Tom Brady was 11 for 23 for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and Laurence Maroney contributed 86 yards on the ground.

Bill Belichick became the 31st coach in NFL history with 100 regular-season wins, improving his record to 100-77.

Rams 18, Broncos 10: At St. Louis, Jeff Wilkins bailed out a shaky offense, accounting for all the scoring in the victory over Denver. In the process, he became the first Ram to score 1,000 points. Steven Jackson had 22 carries for 121 yards for St. Louis.

Tatum Bell rushed for 103 yards but Jake Plummer was just 13 for 26 for 138 yards and had three interceptions for Denver.

Jets 23, Titans 16: At Nashville, Tenn., Chad Pennington, returning from two shoulder surgeries in as many years, threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns to lead New York to the victory over Tennessee. Laveranues Coles was Pennington’s favorite target, finishing with 8 catches for 153 yards.

Kerry Collins was announced as Tennessee’s starter 90 minutes before kickoff. Rookie Vince Young also played a series for Tennessee, completing his first three passes before throwing an interception.

Saints 19, Browns 14: At Cleveland, rookie Reggie Bush didn’t dazzle but certainly didn’t disappoint in his NFL debut. The Heisman Trophy winner finished with 141 total yards to lead New Orleans to the victory. Deuce McAllister ran for 90 yards and Drew Brees threw for 176 yards in his debut with New Orleans.

Kellen Winslow had a solid outing for Cleveland after two injury-plagued seasons with 8 catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Eagles 24, Texans 10: At Houston, a healthy and happy Donovan McNabb threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, including one to Donte’ Stallworth, to lead Philadelphia to a win over Houston. Stallworth finished with 6 catches for 141 yards in his first game with Philadelphia.

No. 1 pick Mario Williams had three tackles but failed to make much of an impact while being shifted up and down the line in his and coach Gary Kubiak’s first game for Houston.

Ravens 27, Buccaneers 0: At Tampa, Fla., Chris McAlister returned one of Baltimore’s three interceptions 61 yards for a touchdown and 340-pound rookie Haloti Ngata lumbered 60 yards with a tipped pass to set up a field goal to key a rout of Tampa Bay. Steve McNair completed 17 of 27 passes for 181 yards and no interceptions in his debut with Baltimore.

Ray Lewis returned for Baltimore after sitting out the last 10 games of 2005 with a hamstring injury that required surgery and Jamal Lewis ran for 78 yards and a touchdown to key the win.

Bengals 23, Chiefs 10: At Kansas City, Mo., exactly eight months to the day after doctors rebuilt his mangled left knee, Carson Palmer hit nine straight passes in one impressive stretch in Cincinnati’s victory over Kansas City. Rudy Johnson and Kenny Watson both had rushing touchdowns for Cincinnati, helping to spoil the debut of Kansas City coach Herm Edwards.

Bears 26, Packers 0: At Green Bay, Wis., Chicago barely let Brett Favre touch the ball, shutting out the three-time MVP for the first time in his career in the victory over Green Bay. Favre finished the game 15 of 29 for 170 yards. Rex Grossman was 18 of 26 for 262 yards as he ran his career record to 3-0 at Lambeau Field. Ahman Green, who is returning from a torn quadriceps injury last season, carried 20 times for 110 yards for Green Bay.

Cardinals 34, 49ers 27: At Glendale, Ariz., Kurt Warner completed 23 of 37 passes for 301 yards and three scores, Arizona turned two first-quarter San Francisco turnovers into touchdowns, and Arizona held on to win. Larry Fitzgerald caught nine passes for 133 yards. Edgerrin James had a rugged debut behind Arizona’s suspect line, gaining 73 yards on 26 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run.
