WSU recap

The Spokesman-Review

High point of the game

For all of the offensive fireworks from WSU, it was a goal-line stand on defense that turned this game from a win into a blowout. Midway through the second quarter Idaho drove nearly 80 yards to the Cougar 1, but on four consecutive downs WSU managed to stonewall the Vandal drive, maintaining a 21-3 lead and opening the floodgates thereafter.

Low point of the game

Purely from a competitive standpoint, things got pretty ugly towards the end of the game, with one running back after another blasting holes through the right side of the line of scrimmage. Sure, it’s great for WSU, but those TV ratings must have taken a nosedive. How about taking a knee throughout the fourth quarter?

A pat on the back

Wide receiver Chris Jordan has had a long and difficult career at WSU, never able to fully recover from a knee injury in the 2003 Apple Cup. Never, that is, until now. The senior finally appears to have regained his speed and his fluidity on the field, and showed it with three touchdown catches. Jordan isn’t the loudest player on the WSU roster, but plenty of others were more than happy to sing his praises following the game.

Needs fixing

Tough to pick anything out as a downer on the Cougar side of things, but two missed field goals from Loren Langley in his first two attempts of the season don’t bode well. WSU’s kicker has been under the gun because of his struggles late last season, and if a game should come down to a kick this year, there probably won’t be too many comfortable people wearing crimson.

Three unanswered questions

“Beating Idaho was fairly easy, but will WSU be able to perform similarly well against better competition?

“How healthy will running back DeMaundray Woolridge be in the coming weeks?

“Will Alex Brink and the Cougars continue to be content with spreading the ball around, even if it means Jason Hill isn’t getting more than two catches?
