The Spokesman-Review

Evan Nash used a fourth-place finish in the final Junior Bowlers Tour stop of the season last Sunday at Players & Spectators to wrap up the top spot on the season-long All-Star Team competition.

Nash compiled 192 points during the season for a 14-point margin over Todd Benner, who won the season-ending event.

Joining them on the All-Star Team are Nick Schmehl, 151 points; Brandon Roush, 144; and Jared Descoteaux, 127. Benner had high average for the season, a 217. Krista Elmore had high average for the girls, a 176.

Benner, who averaged 236 for 11 games after qualifying first with a 250 average, defeated Chad Carpenter 235-176 in the title match. Carpenter averaged 223 for 12 games.

Descoteaux finished third ahead of Nash. Daniel Seifert was fifth. Benner had the day’s high game, a 269. Amanda Oens was high for the girls with a 219.

College scene

Zach Green from Coeur d’Alene (Lake City), a junior on the Puget Sound baseball team who has struggled this season, pitched four strong innings in a 10-0 loss to Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday.

Green allowed four hits in a starting role and stuck out five. For the season, he has a 1-2 record and one save with a 9.53 earned-run average. He has 13 strikeouts, but also has yielded 11 walks and 23 hits, in 17 innings.

Bryn Mooney of Pullman, a junior at Washington State, was a second-team selection on the Pac-10 Conference All-Academic team in women’s swimming. Mooney, who has a 3.69 grade-point average with an undeclared major, was a first-team choice in 2006.

Golf

Former Washington State golfer Rob Logsdon, who later served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, has been named golf coach at the new Glacier High School in Kalispell, Mont.

On the course, Logsdon won the Montana State Mid-Amateur tournament in 2005.

Snowboarding

The Holland brothers from Sandpoint, Nate and Pat, were on the podium together for the first time last weekend in the Suzuki Champion’s Cross Sugarloaf Open in Maine.

Nate won the four-man final race, collecting a Suzuki motorcycle among his prizes, while younger brother Pat was fourth.

Asked about facing his brother in the final race, Nate told the Portland (Maine) Press Herald, “It really doesn’t affect me. He is my brother and I want him to do well, but he’s really just another racer who’s trying to win.”

Pat agreed, noting it was “good to get to the finals,” but as far as his brother was concerned, “it’s just one more guy to get down on the hill.”

Soccer

The Spokane Shadow 89 girls team, which won the State Cup a year ago as 16-year-olds, captured the Washington State Youth Soccer championship last weekend for the U-17 division in Lakewood by defeating the Fenix of Seattle 2-1 in a shootout following two 15-minute overtime periods.

It’s the fourth straight year the team has made it to a State Cup final and marks the first time any team in the state has captured titles two years back to back. The Shadow had defeated the Fenix 1-0 in the finals a year ago after losing the championship match to that team two years ago.

The Shadow 89 players, coached by Jeff Robbins, are: Aubrey Bot, Gonzaga Prep; Elizabeth Boyden, Ferris; Nicole Ervin, Shadle Park; Jaimey Etten, Mead; Ali Fenter, Shadle; Abby Goss, University; Jackie Hakes, Mead; Averi Hallman, Mt. Spokane; Stacy Hamer, G-Prep; Angie Hughes, Mead; Chelsea Jones, Mt. Spokane; Sophie Johnson, G-Prep; Rachael Lowe, Richland; Marissa Mykines, Mead; Ceri Palk, Cheney; Tiara Pittman, Mt. Spokane; Dani Racyzkowski, Ferris; Katy Sloyer, U-Hi; and Kaitlin Whitfield, Cheney.

The four other Shadow teams that advanced to State Cup quarterfinals – the U-13 boys, U-14 girls, U-16 boys and U-16 girls – all were eliminated from the playoffs in that round.
