Mead boys, girls win three-way track meet

Mead’s boys and girls swept a competitive Greater Spokane League three-way meet Thursday afternoon against North Central and host Ferris.

The Panthers boys edged Ferris 75-70 and NC 77-68. Ferris defeated NC 81-63.

Mead’s girls topped the host Saxons 79-71. Both Mead and Ferris cruised past NC.

In the boys meet, Mead showed its power in field events. The Panthers took the top four spots in the pole vault, with Luke Hattrup and Ric Sherman tying for first at 13 feet, 6 inches. Mead also went 1-2-3 in the shot put, led by Mike Magee’s toss of 53-10; took the top two spots in the javelin, topped by Justin Graff’s 169-0; and captured three of the top four spots in the discus, including Todd Loncosty’s winning 142-5.

David Hickerson of Ferris won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.

Mead’s girls won with depth as the Panthers were limited to four titles: Nikki Codd in the 400 (56.70 seconds); Cailyn Torpie in the 3,200 (12:20.00); the 400 relay (49.50); and Ashley Hutchinson in the shot put (41-9). The Panthers had 11 runner-up finishes.

Kelly McNamee of the host Saxons won both hurdles and the high jump. Teammate Kelsey Lin took the 100 and 200. NC’s Mary Graesser cruised to wins in the 800 and 1,600.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Lewis and Clark’s boys swept the field events while defeating Shadle Park and host Gonzaga Prep. Andrew Yamada, discus; Alex Shaw, shot put; Tyler Nanny, javelin; Hayden Fairley, high jump; D.J. McNiel, long jump; Levi Taylor, triple jump; and Kosei Imamura, pole vault, all won for the Tigers. Shadle’s girls won twice, led by winners Jordan Carlson (100, 200), Brianne Brown (400, high jump), Brynn Delong (both hurdles) and Amy Before (long jump, triple jump). The double winners also had a hand in sweeping the relays. … Domination in the 100, 200 and pole vault allowed University’s boys to edge host Mt. Spokane 71-68 in a three-way meet that included Rogers. For U-Hi, Matt Bogyo won the 200 and placed second in the 100, Chris Powell won the long jump and placed second in the 400, and Josh Hopkins won the shot put and placed second in the discus. The host Wildcats girls cruised behind double winners Courtney Zalud (800, 1,600) and Sam Damiano (discus, shot put). U-Hi’s Maddy Fuchs won the 200 and both hurdles. … Danny Groby won the 100, placed second in the 200 and was part of two winning relays as Central Valley’s boys posted an 88-57 win at East Valley. CV’s Sean Coyle won the 1,600 and 3,200. EV’s girls won 90-60 as Lori Bourgeous won the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles, and Kathy Tate (shot put, discus) and Eleaya Scheurch (long jump, triple jump) were double winners.

Softball

Reliever Kelsie Vallies struck out the final two batters to preserve North Central’s 4-3 win over visiting Rogers (3-7) in the Greater Spokane League. Vallies, in relief of winner Taylor Bachman, entered after Samantha Shelton’s two-run double in the seventh inning. The second-place Indians improved to 9-1. … Also in the league, Alex Cey’s two-run homer in the first launched Mead (7-3) toward a 6-3 win at Central Valley. Katrina Miller added a two-run single during Mead’s four-run seventh. Alexa Morales had an RBI triple and Becky White also tripled for the Bears (6-4). … Danica Hanley went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, tying the game with a two-run homer in the sixth and winning it with an RBI single in the eighth, as East Valley (4-6) defeated visiting Mt. Spokane 10-9. Starter Ryleigh Riggin, who re-entered in the eighth, earned the win for the Knights. Andy Hacker went 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs for the Wildcats (3-7). … Sam Skillingstad pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10 and walking none, and hit a grand slam in the second inning as Shadle Park (10-0) rolled to a five-inning, 16-0 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (4-6). Shadle’s China Frost added a three-run homer in the second. The Bullpups’ Shelby Wilcoxen broke up Skillingstad’s no-hit bid with a single in the fourth. … Catcher Hillary Johnson had three hits and Caitlin Conner pitched a seven-hitter as Ferris (1-9) notched a 6-2 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (0-10). LC’s Kendall Pavey also pitched a seven-hitter.

Boys soccer

Mitch Weller’s hat trick led Cheney (11-0, 8-0) to a 4-0 win at Riverside (5-5, 5-4) in the Great Northern League. Justin Hale scored early in the second half to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead. Cheney registered its 10th consecutive shutout. The Blackhawks have outscored rivals 51-0 during the streak. Cheney allowed two goals to Gonzaga Prep in a non-leaguer to open the season. … Elsewhere, Kyle Kinard, Danny Kang and Evan McCain scored twice apiece to lead second-place Pullman (9-1, 8-1) to an 8-1 win over visiting West Valley (3-7, 3-4). … Bobby Hodge and Ben Groce had three goals and one assist apiece as Medical Lake (7-5, 6-4) posted a 6-1 win over visiting Chewelah (1-10, 0-10). … Matt Dougherty’s hat trick gave Deer Park (4-6, 4-5) a 3-0 win over visiting Clarkston (2-8, 2-7).
