Area roundup: Cardinals shortstop Boardman will play for Utah next season

Angie Boardman, North Idaho College’s softball starting shortstop, has decided to play for the University of Utah next year, signing a letter of intent Monday.

Boardman’s .394 batting average is the highest in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and epitomizes her second year for the Cardinals. She has eight home runs, 37 runs and 37 runs batted in for the Cardinals in 155 at-bats.

A member of the 2006 All-SWAC second team, Boardman played in 50 games during her freshman season, hitting .350 with 55 hits, including eight homers and 42 RBIs. During her freshman year she broke several NIC records, including most RBIs in a game (five), and most homers in a game (two).

As a senior for University High School, she had a league-best .554 batting average and was named offensive and defensive player of the year.

Men’s golf

Washington State is tied for seventh with one round remaining at the Pac-10 Championships at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

Senior Jordan Madison is tied for 19th at 1-over-par 217.

Washington is in fifth place.

The tournament wraps up today.

Women’s golf

The University of Idaho sits in first place with 18 holes to play at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Las Cruces, N.M.

Juniors Kelly Nakashima and Renee Skidmore are tied for fifth at 7-over 151. Senior Cassie Castleman and freshman Beth Stonecypher sit one stroke back at 8-over 152.

The tournament concludes today.

“Washington State remains in eighth place with one round left at the Pac-10 Championships at Broadmoor Country Club in Seattle.

Sophomore Amy Eneroth (Mead High) is tied for 15th at 9-over 153.

Washington is in fifth. The Huskies were led by senior Amber Prange, who carded a 1-over 73 in the second round and sits in fourth place.

Baseball

Nick Hall drove in four runs and Washington State pounded out 17 hits as the Cougars topped visiting Gonzaga 12-9 in a non-conference game at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Hall hit a three-run double in WSU’s five-run first inning. The Cougars added two runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead.

Paul Gran and Simi Reynolds had three hits apiece for WSU (20-18) while Evan Wells and Darin Holcomb had three each for the Bulldogs (26-19).

“Washington State sophomore Ross Humes was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week while sophomore infielder Travis Coulter was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week.

Humes went 1-0 with two saves in three appearances.

Coulter hit .545 with three doubles, two runs and a triple in three games last week.

Women’s tennis

Kasey Knox of Eastern Washington and Katy Proietti of Montana State shared the Big Sky Conference player of the week award.

Knox broke the Eastern Washington record for most singles victories in a season with 14. The junior from West Richland, Wash., defeated the No. 1 singles players from Lewis-Clark State and Idaho.

“Whitworth’s Linh Aven and Rachael McCoola have been named to the 2007 All-Northwest Conference second team.

The pair led the Pirates to a fifth-place finish in the NWC this season.
