Oregon, Belloti agree to contract extension

Oregon coach Mike Bellotti has agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $150,000 a year, with a guaranteed base of $650,000 in compensation, the school said.

Bellotti, 56, gets a guaranteed base of $650,000 in compensation that includes such things as a car, country club membership and TV contract.

•New York Giants’ Antonio Peirce will replace Chicago Bears’ middle linebacker Brian Urlacher in Saturday’s Pro Bowl. Urlacher suffered a toe injury in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

•Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was added to the NFC’s Pro Bowl roster after Brian Dawkins of the Philadelphia Eagles withdrew because of personal reasons.

•Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Johnathan Joseph pleaded not guilty to possession of marijuana, stemming from an arrest Jan. 22 in northern Kentucky.

•Former Pittsburgh defensive backs coach Darren Perry was hired to fill the same role with Oakland.

Baseball

Reds sign Guardado

Reliever Eddie Guardado accepted a minor league contract from the Cincinnati Reds, who are giving him a chance to work his way back from reconstructive elbow surgery.

If all goes well, the former Seattle Mariner could be pitching by the middle of the season.

•Steve Barber, the first 20-game winner in modern Baltimore Orioles history, died Sunday from complications of pneumonia at a Henderson, Nev., hospital. He was 67.

•Max Lanier, who pitched in three consecutive World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, died last week in Dunellon, Fla. He was 91.

•Outfielder Bill Hall and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a $24 million, four year contract.

•Serguey Linares, a former pitcher in Cuba’s national league, agreed to a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was invited to spring training.

•Rick Helling is retiring from baseball after pitching in the major leagues for 12 years.

•The Dominican Republic eliminated defending champion Venezuela from title contention in the Caribbean Series with a 7-1 win in Carolina, Puerto, Rico.

Italy raises security

Soccer fans won’t be allowed into stadiums in Italy unless security measures are met, a decision that comes days after rioting at a game in Sicily in which a police officer was killed.

•Sami Mustonen of Finland and Olympic champion Jennifer Heil of Canada won freestyle World Cup moguls events in La Plagne, France.

•Xavier Malisse of Belgium rallied past top-seeded James Blake, completing the rain-delayed final in the wind for his second Delray Beach International title in Delray Beach, Fla.

•Morgan State basketball coach Todd Bozeman was charged with misdemeanor assault after an argument with a restaurant employee in Farmville, Va.

•The highway between Whistler and Vancouver was closed again briefly, due to a rock slide, raising questions about what will happen if the route gets blocked during the 2010 Olympic Games.
