Ideal for do-it-yourselfers with lots of visitors but limited space, this futon sofabed project is a stylish way to keep overnight guests off the floor. The project converts from a handsome California Mission-style sofa during the day to a firm, comfortable bed at night (without the springs and lumps of most sofabeds).

Easy enough for most woodworkers, the project is built from standard oak and pine lumber. Careful measuring, cutting and fitting are required, but most of the cuts are straight, and all of the curves are traced from full-size patterns.

What you need

The sofabed is assembled in four main sections: the two slatted mattress platforms, and the two side pieces with arms. To build, trace the pieces onto wood, cut out, sand and bolt the four subassemblies together. Once assembled, apply finish of choice and add a full-size (75- by 54-inch) futon mattress.

The unit measures 86 inches long by 33 inches tall by 36 inches deep as a sofa; as a bed, it measures 86 inches long by 54 inches wide by 21 inches tall.

How to order the plan

The Futon Sofabed plan, No. 850, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step directions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line.

A package of two futon sofa bed plans, No. C86, is $16.95 and includes this plan and one other. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $4 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders), and allow about two weeks for delivery.
