Area roundup: Idaho’s Castleman wins Inland Cup golf tourney

University of Idaho’s Cassie Castleman edged Washington State’s Jessica Black on the second playoff hole Tuesday to earn women’s medalist honors for the Inland Cup at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Clarkston.

Both golfers finished with 151 totals for the 36-hole tournament.

WSU’s Chris Collins shot a 140 to finish one shot off the pace in the men’s tourney.

“The Eastern Washington women placed 18th at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational in Fresno, Calif.

Eva Yoe paced EWU with a 156 total. She tied for 41st place.

Softball

Whitworth’s Heather Case was named the Northwest Conference player of the week, while teammate Jessie LaPlante was tabbed pitcher of the week.

Case batted .455 in the Pirates’ sweep of Albertson, while Plante was 2-0 with a pair of complete games and a 1.50 earned run average.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs go on the road for two games this week – both against U.S. Division opponents.

Tonight, the Chiefs visit Portland in the second part of a home-and-home matchup. Spokane will play at division-leading Everett on Saturday.

“The Nelson Leafs completed a four-game KIJHL playoff sweep of the Spokane Braves with a 6-4 victory at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
