In brief: Drive slower on Five Mile Road

The Spokesman-Review

The speed limit will be dropping on North Five Mile Road between Strong and Waikiki roads.

Spokane County commissioners decided last week to reduce the 35 mph speed limit to 30 mph in one section and 25 mph in another.

The limit will drop to 30 mph on the section that runs north from Strong Road to the point, in the vicinity of Hawthorne Road, where North Five Mile Road turns east to Waikiki.

In the Hawthorne- to-Waikiki section, where the road winds its way down a steep bluff, the speed limit will fall to 25 mph.

At a June 19 public hearing, area residents called for reduction even more than county Engineer Bob Brueggeman had proposed, and commissioners chose a compromise.

Air life vests banned on river

Hot air is not enough for Spokane County commissioners when it comes to safety on the Spokane River.

Commissioners last week banned life preservers that rely on air or compressed gas. The action applies only to unincorporated portions of the river.

Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Walker told commissioners the action was needed because inflatable life preservers are too easily punctured in rapids. Also, he said devices that aren’t already inflated may fill too slowly in an emergency.

There were no inflatable devices on the Coast Guard list of Type 3 life preservers when the county ordinance requiring that type on the Spokane River was passed, Walker said.
