Mike Vlahovich The Spokesman-Review

A state championship by junior high-jumper Melissa Mauro helped spearhead West Valley’s sixth-place team finish in the State 2A meet to highlight last week’s state high school track and field efforts by area athletes.

Mauro cleared 5-foot-5 and teammate Alyssa Wold finished third at 5-4 for 16 of the Eagles’ 39 points, two away from a trophy and 15 away from the team championship.

Ashley Kenney was second in the discus and sixth in the shot put for 13 more points.

Bri Almy had a pair of third places in the 100 and 200 sprints and added a dozen to the team total during the meet in Tacoma.

Sean Coyle lowered his school record to 9:10.84 and placed second at 3,200 meters during the State 4A meet in Pasco.

East Valley’s Case Parker finished second in the 400 and Tim Armstrong third at 300 hurdles in the 3A meet, also in Pasco.

Greenacres in Class A boys, North Pines Class B boys and Evergreen’s Class A girls completed perfect seasons with their all-league victories.

Greenacres’ Class B girls edged Evergreen by a point for the title after going unbeaten in dual meets, but finishing second to the Grizzlies 143-112 in the all-league meet.

In Class A Boys, Ryan Nungester won the 100 and 200 sprints and Nicholas Cutrone was long jump champion and second to Freeman double winner Scott Eberle in the 400.

Both Nungester and Cutrone were also members of Greenacres’ victorious 400-relay team. The Bruins beat Horizon 115 to 90.5 with North Pines in third.

During girls competition Evergreen’s Paula Jennings won the 100, 200 and 400 leading the Grizzlies to a 143.5 to 115 win over Greenacres in the Class 1A meet. Included was a quick 12.69 100 meters.

Greenacres’ Josie Warner timed 5:47.06 to win the 1,600 and was the 800 victor as well. Warner also was a member of the 1,600 relay team that set the only meet record this year, 4:31.7.

Evergreen got a boost from distance runner Madi Barnes, who won both the 800 and 1,600, the latter in 5:40.08, in its win over the league champion Greenacres.

The Grizzlies also finished one-two in the long jump and were third through seventh behind a pair of Bowdish high jumpers, to pile up points.

Bowdish’s Brianna Bemis won both the 100 and 400 races.
