In brief: Genesis finishes first academic year

Genesis Preparatory Academy, a Christian secondary school, wrapped up its first academic year with an awards ceremony and outdoor activities.

The nondenominational high school is located at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls.

The academy also wrapped up the year by raffling off a 2007 Dodge truck. Tickets were sold to help raise money for a school chemistry lab and library.

Patricia Power won the vehicle, provided by Dishman Dodge.

Library offering summer reading program

To get your children excited about reading, you can sign them up for the Post Falls Library summer reading program.

Registration is free and will take place between 3 and 7 p.m. today.

This year’s theme is “Get a Clue @ Your Library.”

Children ages 3 and up who attend the official registration will receive a free book, make a detective badge and receive a reading logbook.

Children who can’t register today may sign up anytime later.

Weekly prizes and drawings will be held.

Children also are encouraged to attend free themed events throughout the summer.

Activities will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. unless listed otherwise.

Planned events include:

“ Next Thursday: Cecil the Magician. Cecil will teach kids to be master clue-catchers. He’ll use comedy, magic and mystery in his performance.

“ June 28: “Once Upon a Time,” an interactive puppet show and singalong.

“ July 12: K-9 police dog demonstration. The Kootenai County canine unit and its dog detectives will be in action.

“ July 19: “Mysteries of the World.” Drop in between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. for this top-secret activity.

Appreciation event scheduled

Panhandle State Bank’s customer appreciation event and Post Falls Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours are set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 28 at 3235 E. Mullan Ave.

The Kelly Hughes Band will perform.

A grand prize drawing and giveaway also are planned.

Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation recently celebrated scholarship recipients among new and returning students with an ice-cream social at the Institute for Extended Learning lodge.

Rock climbling clinic planned

Climbers of all ability levels are encouraged to take part in a four-part rock climbing clinic offered by North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits.

The clinic will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays June 19 and 26 and July 10 and 17. Participants will meet for the first session in the Outdoor Pursuits Office on the lower level of NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building. All subsequent sessions will be held at Q’emiln Riverside Park in Post Falls.

The clinic is designed as an introduction to rock climbing and will include safety training, knot tying, belaying, climbing techniques and anchoring.

Cost is $100 and includes all gear. Space is limited. For more information, call 769-7809.
