Spokane Valley Baseball under way

Spokane Valley Baseball has begun its summer season of Midget and Pee Wee League competition.

First Midget games were last Thursday with four victorious teams and the fifth game ending in a tie.

During RV’s Northwest’s (University) 15-10 win over McDonald’s, Nathan Beres struck out nine batters in four innings and Ricky Rose hit a two-run single. Zakrey Hall hit a triple as Grocery Outlet (Adams) and Orchard Center tied. Jacob Newton pitched and hit a home run during Sunrise’s 8-5 win over Otis Orchards.

“The Summit Sheriff’s got off to a 2-0 start in the American Division of the Pee Wee League. Daniel Dach and Ethan Arpin had eight strikeouts apiece and Summit scored seven runs in the final inning of an 8-7 win over George Velis DDS (Otis Orchards 1). Arpin’s home run, following three base hits, produced the winning runs. Dach homered in a 22-5 win over McDonald’s (Skyview) where John Somerlott and Jarrett McLeslie each went 4 for 5.

Three other teams in the division, including McDonald’s, won two of three games. McDonald’s blanked Trentwood 13-0 and beat Ponderosa I 15-6 as Lucas Humble struck out 17 and Andrew Allen 13. Ponderosa won its other two games.

Greenacres II defeated White Elephant (Adams I) 6-4, with Ethan Frazier and Josh Quartararo both 3 for 3 with home runs, and East Farms 6-0. The team lost to George Velis DDS 11-7 despite Sammy Anderson‘s 3-for-3 game.

George Velis’ Rachel Lunstroth was 5 for 8 in two games and drove in five runs. Ricky Davis and Matthew Hughes were each 3 for 4.

Three Pee Wee National League teams won twice, McDonald’s, South Pines and Chester I. Chester also had a tie. Nate Tesdahl had five hits and scored six runs in two of the games. Austin Hibbs hit a three-run homer and Gunnar Arlt had two strong pitching efforts and homered.

Among other highlights: Grocery Outlet’s (Adams II) Dawson Lack was 4 for 5, scored four runs and drove in seven, including a home run; Connor Grytdal and Nick Harris of White Elephant, combined for the maximum 15 strikeouts in five innings despite its loss to Greenacres II; Connor Stavnes pitched no-hit ball and struck out eight for Blasingame Insurance (Pasadena Park) in a victory over University. He also had two hits and a home run, as did teammate Michael Chan.

Painted Hills results

Painted Hills Ladies League was in action this week.

Results include four winning rounds in the 50s during nine-hole play.

Betty Grassl won A flight by shooting 53. Marion Pillsbury shot 56 to win B flight. And Dorothy Rousch won C flight at 59. D flight victor was Wilma Capaul with 63.

Net winners were Debbie Paullin with 42 in A flight, Kathy Walker with 40 in B, Emma Long with 35 in C and Pat Reiter with 32 in D.

Cleo Workland had a chip-in.

President’s Cup continues

The second leg of the Liberty Lake Ladies Nine Hole Golf Club President’s Cup was contested on Thursday.

Joanne Ruddell had a net 36 in first flight as did Bette Devine in the third flight. Mary Gehrman and Sadie Rueckert tied with 37s in the second flight.

There were also a pair of chip-ins. Connie Spencer did so on the 17th hole and Polly Soderquist made hers from off the green on No. 5.

Trailhead medal play

Marcia Rowley topped weekly Trailhead Ladies Club golf with a low gross 48 in A flight. Dee Elder was net winner with 30.

In B flight, Joy Russell shot 54, while three women, Barb Gunderson, Iness Walth and Bev Johnson tied for net bests at 38.

In C flight, Myrlene Haskell shot 70 and Peg Nadvornick netted 33. Renee Begovich had a no-handicap 69.
