In brief: Robbery suspect arrested

The Spokesman-Review

The Spokane police SWAT and Gang Enforcement teams stormed a house and arrested a robbery suspect Friday afternoon.

Tregeous R. Sims, 30, was wanted for first-degree robbery, kidnapping, burglary and assault after a robbery on June 9, according to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office news release. Sims allegedly robbed six people at 6300 N. Market St.

On the night of the robbery, a sheriff’s K-9 tracked Sims to 2931 E. Decatur Ave., just two blocks from the crime scene, the release stated. After an investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant for Friday’s operation.

Sims was inside the house and was arrested without incident.

He has been in Spokane for a short time but had an extensive criminal history in Texas, the release stated.

Property taxes due Wednesday

Kootenai County property owners have until Wednesday to pay their property tax bills.

Yet about 5,600 property owners didn’t get their tax bill until Friday because of a glitch in the county’s new software system and printing problems. That’s a small percentage of the county’s 92,000 taxable parcels, said Treasurer Tom Malzahn.

He expects to get a few complaints, but the county is willing to work with property owners who have concerns.

Tax bills normally go out in November, and the first half of the payment is due by Dec. 20. By law, property owners have until June 20 to pay the second half.

Property owners also didn’t receive a reminder from the county this year because of computer and timing problems.

Malzahn said a letter that went out with property tax assessments earlier this year inadvertently mentioned the reminder notices that were never sent.

The treasurer’s office in Coeur d’Alene, 451 Government Way, has extended hours 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mailed payments must be postmarked by Wednesday.

Property owners also can drop off payments in the lobby of any of the US Bank locations in Coeur d’Alene, Hayden and Post Falls.

Deadline set for water deal

The state’s top water official has given hundreds of groundwater users in Southern Idaho until July 6 to quit pumping or satisfy the demands of two trout farms that say they’ve been forced to slash fish production because they aren’t getting water they’re legally due.

The Friday order from Dave Tuthill, state Department of Water Resources director, covers 591 water rights over 16,638 acres.

Still, representatives of Magic Valley groundwater pumpers say economic losses on fields already planted with crops such as sugar beets and potatoes could approach $20 million.
