Summer fun at Pavillion

Paul Delaney Correspondent

A weekly selection of family movies, sprinkled with a half-dozen major events, highlights the 2007 summer season at Liberty Lake’s Pavillion Park.

Featuring classics like “West Side Story,” kid flicks such as “The Muppet Movie” and the Al Gore production of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the Friends of Pavillion Park have booked a wide variety of flicks for the Friday-Saturday showings.

The season at the park officially kicks off with the annual Fourth of July Celebration with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Marcia Ball Band beginning at 6 p.m.

A July 14 concert by Nina Storey will be part of the Valley Girl Triathlon events. It starts at 7 p.m.

The park will rock and roll with a Battle of the Bands on July 28 from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

“We’re looking for bands to take part in this event,” said Mary Wren-Wilson, recreation specialist with the city of Liberty Lake. Interested bands should contact Angela Cosby at 755-6729.

Former Vice President Gore’s Academy Award-winning film on global warming is scheduled Aug. 4.

The Liberty Lake Centennial Rotary Artfest takes place Aug. 11 at the park followed by “West Side Story” at dusk.

The season closes with the annual Labor Day weekend concert by the Spokane Symphony beginning at 7 p.m.

All movies and concerts are produced by the Friends of Pavillion Park and sponsored by Greenstone. Admission is free.

The Liberty Lake Parks and Recreation program also will be busy.

Under the guidance of Adriano Eva and Angela Cosby, offerings include a raft full of river activities, a court jammed with basketball, plus day camps.

“We kind of looked around and said, “Let’s see what we have,” Eva said. “How we can offer activities that will get people out of the house.”

With a lake and river close by, the staff reasoned, “obviously we should offer opportunities for people to use what we have,” Eva said.

The department contracted with outfitter Wiley E. Waters to conduct a series of rafting outings that take advantage of the Spokane River. “They will do the whole job for us,” Eva said. The contractor is fully insured and has all the equipment, which made it an easy decision. “A lot of people signing up. We are hoping it will be a popular activity.” .

Ongoing activities include a summer day camp. “This is very popular right now,” said Eva. “A lot of families are signing up. We can say it’s been a hit. Very successful and popular with the families.” The first annual Liberty Lake Volleyball Classic is set for Aug. 18 and 19 at Pavillion Park.

A three-on-three basketball program is giving abut 70 kids an opportunity to prepare for Hoopfest, Eva said. “The parents are happy to have something like this because they usually have to drive to Medical Lake to get games.”

Registration deadlines and costs vary on all activities. For more information, call 755-6729 or go to www.libertylakewa.gov/ live/parks.asp.
