Sasquatch split two games

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch split a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader with the Big Bend Vikings in baseball action on Wednesday in Moses Lake.

In the opener, A.J. Proszak scattered nine hits, allowing three runs in a complete-game 5-3 win. Adam Smith had two hits, including a home run. Brett Henry, Tom Barlow and Braden Friesz added two hits apiece for CCS.

In the second game, Cory Twede, Ryan Bernsen and Connor Bridgeman hit home runs for Big Bend (17-20, 10-11) en route to a 9-2 win. Cody Brubaker had two hits, including a homer, for the Sasquatch (23-17, 13-9). Michael McCanna took the loss.

Men’s golf

The University of Idaho fell to 17-over-par at the Western Athletic Conference championship for an eighth-place finish. Nevada shot 860 to beat Hawaii by one shot. Russell Grove shot a 74 for Idaho, finishing the tourney tied for 22nd with teammate Brad Tensen at 221. Senior Gabe Wilson shot a 225 for a 33rd-place finish and Ben Weyland shot 226 for 34th place.

Tennis

Eastern Washington placed three players on the Big Sky All-Conference Team. For the women, Kasey Knox was named to the first team, the first from EWU since the sport was included in the Big Sky in 1988. For the men, sophomores Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder earned first-team honors, the third and fourth first-teamers in EWU history.

Track and field

Idaho pole vaulter Melinda Owen was named Western Athletic Conference women’s outdoor athlete of the week after clearing 13 feet, 5 1/4 inches at the Duane Hartman Invite on Saturday. Owen holds the school record at 13-6 1/4.
