CCS tennis teams earn second place

The Community Colleges of Spokane men’s and women’s tennis teams each finished in second place as the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships wrapped up its three-day run at Spokane Falls Community College on Sunday.

In men’s play, Andrew Persen and Jarrod Watson claimed titles at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, and Watson and Casey Skinner won the No. 3 doubles crown as CCS scored 117 points, eight behind champion Green River Community College.

CCS also collected runners-up finishes in two singles matches and two doubles matches.

Wally Heidenson of CCS was the coach of the year.

In women’s action, Bellevue claimed championships at all six singles positions and all three doubles positions to easily win the conference title with 141 points. Spokane was second with 109 with three second-place finishes in singles and two in doubles.

Baseball

Arizona’s Bill Rhinehart hit for the cycle and drove in four runs and C.J. Ziegler went 4 for 6 with six RBIs as 14th-ranked Arizona completed a series sweep of the University of Washigton with a 17-8 win Sunday at Tucson, Ariz.

Softball

The University of Washington beat Georgia 1-0 in the championship game of the Lincoln (Neb.) Regional of the NCAA Division I regionals and advance to host the Super Regionals this week.

Golf

Jeffrey J. Anderson was low gross and Pat Musselman was low net in the championship flight at the Kootenai County Amateur, held Saturday and Sunday at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.

Anderson shot 137 gross, winning by five strokes over Chuck Shriner and Craig Ziegler. Musselman’s net score of 137 was the tops in the field.

Four players qualified for the season-ending Sterling Savings Bank Shootout.

Anderson qualified as a result of his low gross score in the championship flight. Also advancing are Don Thompson with a low net score of 140 in the first flight, Terry Farmer (135 in second flight) and David Peterson (131 in third flight).
