CCS women’s golf wins again

Community Colleges of Spokane’s women won their ninth Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges golf championship in 11 years with a 19-stroke victory Monday at Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash.

CCS had a 511-530 margin over runner-up Skagit Valley.

Christie Dalsanders, who has coached the Sasquatch for five years and produced four of the titles, was named the NWAACC women’s golf Coach of the Year for the fifth straight year.

Green River’s Paige Gifford was medalist with a 10-over-par 154 in the 36-hole event. CCS’s Sadie Green tied for fifth at 168 and teammates Kara Winey (170) and Sarah Villalovoz (173) were seventh and eighth.

On the men’s side, CCS was fourth in the 12-team field. Walla Walla won the team title with a 603-608 margin over Green River. CCS had 634.

Bellevue’s Richard Lee was medalist with an even-par 144. Two CCS players tied for 15th, Jason Azzarito and Tyler Morris, matching 14-over scores of 158.

Men’s golf

A trio from the area are four strokes off the lead after the first round of the 81st Washington Open Invitational at Glendale Country Club in Bellevue.

David Fern (Spokane Country Club), Tim McElhinny (Painted Hills) and Adam Syverson (Indian Canyon) shot 1-over 72s.

Steve Prugh (Manito) was another shot back at 73.

Three share first with 3-under 68s. The 54-hole tournament runs through Wednesday.
