Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Chris Phillips and Patrick Eaves scored goals 47 seconds apart early in the first period and the Ottawa Senators set a team record with their eighth straight win, a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night in Ottawa.

Martin Gerber made 30 saves and Daniel Alfredsson, Andrej Meszaros and Chris Kelly also scored for Ottawa, which is off to the best start in NHL history through 14 games with a 13-1-0 mark and a record total of 26 points.

Islanders 3, Rangers 2: At Uniondale, N.Y., Miroslav Satan scored the winner for the second straight game, and the New York Islanders – with three goals in the final period – snapped the New York Rangers’ winning streak at four with a victory.

Thrashers 2, Capitals 1 (OT): At Atlanta, Todd White scored the 100th goal of his career with 3:26 left in overtime to give the Thrashers a victory over Washington.

Melrose apologizes

ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose apologized for negative remarks about the area around the New Jersey Devils’ new Prudential Center arena.

In a video segment posted on ESPN.com last week, Melrose described the recently opened arena as a “beautiful new building” but added, “Don’t go outside if you have a wallet or anything else, because the area around the arena is just horrible.”

“I was trying to be funny and I’m sorry it didn’t come through that way,” he said by phone from St. Louis. “There was no malice on my part.”
