Bowden reaches milestone

Bobby Bowden won his 300th game at Florida State in the Seminoles’ 24-16 victory against Maryland.

Bowden, who has 373 career coaching wins, is assured of keeping his lead over Penn State’s Joe Paterno for at least one more week in their long-running competition for the most wins in major college history. He is two victories ahead of Paterno, whose Nittany Lions lost to Michigan State 35-31.

Michigan subdued

“I’m sure Chad Henne will be seeing him in his sleep.”– Ohio State’s Jim Tressel on Vernon Gholston, who had three of the Buckeyes’ four sacks in a 14-3 victory over Michigan.

The Ohio State defense held Michigan to 91 yards, the first time the Wolverines failed to reach 100 yards since 1962.

Strong in defeat

Jeremy Trimble caught 11 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns in Army’s 49-39 loss to Tulsa. … Adam Weber threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns for Minnesota in a 41-34 loss to Wisconsin. … Rice’s Chase Clement passed for 353 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-31 loss to Tulane. … Jacksonville’s Chris Horton threw for 417 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-27 loss to Wagner.

Harvard outmuscles Yale

Scoring its first touchdown 68 seconds into the game and adding 20 more points before halftime, Harvard won the 124th edition of The Game 37-6 before 57,248 at Yale Bowl.

The ease of the Crimson’s dominance was shocking, and it wiped out in a single afternoon Yale’s bid for its first outright Ivy League championship since 1980, its first perfect season since 1960 and its first 10-0 record since 1909.
