Bears appear ready to battle Saxons

Central Valley appears ready. The Bears roared past Shadle Park 47-12 in Thursday night’s Greater Spokane League high school football game, a prelude to next week’s first-place showdown against Ferris.

CV scored 34 points in a wild second quarter in which the Highlanders also had their two touchdowns.

Ahead just 3-0 after a quarter, the floodgates opened in the second period. CV ran at will, finishing the night with 400 yards on the ground, and scored five touchdowns in the second quarter for a 37-12 halftime lead.

Following Brad Whitley‘s short TD run, Greg Barnes recovered a Shadle fumble in the end zone. Taylor Price answered a 71-yard Highlander scoring run and Tyler Cochran scored twice, catching a 25-yard pass from Blake Bledsoe and finishing the second-quarter carnage with a 62-yard score.

Price, who finished the night with 120 rushing yards, added a 42-yard scoring run before Connor Janhunen’s second field goal capped things. Cochran had 123 yards on four runs and Whitley added 63.

The Bears (6-1 overall, 5-1 in league), have two games remaining, Ferris and University in their bid to reach the postseason. University (4-2, 3-2) is in the same boat. The Titans, who played the Saxons Friday night, finish at home against East Valley and CV in its playoff bid.

EV (3-3) played Lewis and Clark and finishes against U-Hi next week as it gears to the 3A playoffs.

West Valley (2-4, 1-2) played Cheney Friday night and Freeman played Kettle Falls in pivotal Great Northern League and Northeast A League games.

Last week the Eagles won 55-7 as Bryan Peterson ran his career passing yardage to 4,209 with 36 touchdowns and Parker Flynn had five catches for 101 yards, his sixth straight 100-yard receiving game this year.

CV soccer on move

A pair of 1-0 victories last week put Central Valley in good playoff shape in GSL soccer.

The Bears (5-3) defeated University and Lewis and Clark on goals by sophomore Jackie Morden and Haleigh Miller respectively. Wins moved the Bears into a tie fifth place in league and fourth among 4A schools with two matches remaining – against Gonzaga Prep (6-1), which shares the league lead with Mead and Shadle Park, and surging Mt. Spokane (5-2).

University is nine points behind CV in league with three matches to go. The Titans also lost 3-1 to Shadle.

East Valley (3-4) had a couple of tough matches last week. The Knights lost 1-0 in two overtimes against Mt. Spokane (5-2) and 2-1 in overtime to Mead. They played Gonzaga Prep on Friday.

“WV (11-2, 9-2) remains one of the top three teams in the Great Northern League following recent 3-0 and 2-0 wins. The three-pronged offensive attack of Kaley Way (13 goals), Dee Dee Garbe (11) and Laura Estey (9) continues to lead the team.

Runners think regional

Wednesday brings down the curtain on the dual meet portion of the cross country season with runners now peaking for postseason.

Central Valley’s girls will put the finishing touches on a second straight GSL championship, this one outright. Bears boys will finish second.

The day before, West Valley’s boys are in Pullman where they hope to wrap up the Great Northern League title and with victory, the girls would finish second.

CV swept University and beat Mt. Spokane in a race where Jayson Taylor outlegged Mt. Spokane sophomore standout Allan Schroeder 16:21 to 16:25. The Bears had five of the top seven places. The girls had four of the top five runners, including a one-two finish by Eden Lake and Madi Barnes for its double win.

The Eagles had the top six finishers in both boys and girls races to sweep past Medical Lake and Clarkston. Michael White and Krystal Hughes were individual winners.

Freeman’s boys and girls lost to Lakeside in a meet between NEA unbeatens.

Titans prep for district

University has a tough ending to its GSL volleyball season, but the Titans (5-3) are a lock for the District 8 tournament this year. Top four finishers from the six-team tournament that begins Oct. 23 will advance to regionals.

U-Hi beat Ferris 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 this week, three players with nine kills each and moved two matches in front of Central Valley (3-5) which lost in four games to Shadle Park. Ashley Semler had 12 kills and a dozen digs.

East Valley (5-3) lost its 3A showdown with Mt. Spokane and also was beaten in four games by second-place Lewis and Clark in a match where Allie Riggin had 15 kills.

“West Valley leads the Great Northern League with a 9-1 record and has four matches remaining over the next two weeks, including against Pullman and Colville which also have a loss apiece.

The Eagles most recently beat Cheney and Deer Park, Melissa Mauro with 24 kills and Alyssa Wold with 63 assists.

Fastpitch in slowpitch

A fastpitch score in a slowpitch softball game determined regular-season winner of the GSL.

University defeated Central Valley 2-1 to break a tie in the final game of the season and secure home field for next week’s playoffs. The Titans (13-1) and Bears (12-2) earn first-round byes in next week’s playoffs. They will play at home at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

There were plenty of hits but few runs in Thursday’s game. CV led 1-0 after two innings, but U-Hi scored solo runs in the third and sixth for victory.
