Johnson says all stars on drugs

Disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson wasn’t surprised by Marion Jones’ confession, and he’s waiting for more athletes to admit they took banned drugs.

“I believe that everyone on the international level is using performance-enhancing drugs,” Johnson said in a radio interview with Al-Jazeera. “And, you know, it’s widespread and it’s going to continue on. A lot more people (are) going to be also coming forward.”

Johnson ran a record 9.79 seconds to win the 100-meter gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, then tested positive for the steroid stanozolol and was stripped of his medal and time.

Jones admitted last week she was using banned substances when she won five Olympic medals at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Johnson said there is even more pressure on athletes to be faster now than when he was running.

“There’s too (much) prize money out there,” he said.

Jets’ Coleman still may not play

Jets safety Erik Coleman of Spokane was listed as questionable Friday for New York’s game against Philadelphia as he recovers from a concussion.

Coleman, injured two weeks ago at Buffalo, missed last Sunday’s game against the Giants after sitting out practice the entire week. He wore a red no-contact jersey earlier in the week, but had his regular jersey on during practice Friday.

Coleman was injured during the Jets’ 17-14 loss at Buffalo on Sept. 30.

Spokane cyclists win Furnace Creek

It was a Spokane sweep at the Furnace Creek 508, the endurance bicycle race that includes more than 35,000 feet of climbing through the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, Calif.

It was the second straight men’s solo division win for Michael Emde, 37. His time of 27 hours, 32 minutes broke his 2005 record by 17 minutes.

Karen Armstrong, 47, also from Spokane, won her first Furnace 508 with a time of 36 hours, 58 minutes, nearly three hours ahead of the next woman in the solo race.

The Furnace Creek 508 is a qualifier for RAAM (Race Across America), which is held each June.
