Chiefs defeat defending Memorial Cup champions
VANCOUVER, British CoLumbia – Chris Bruton scored the only goal Spokane needed – a wrist shot from the left circle – and Judd Blackwater added an empty-netter as the Chiefs downed the Vancouver Giants 2-0 in Western Hockey League action Sunday night.
Blackwater ensured the win with his goal at 19:52 of the third period after Bruton put Spokane ahead 1-0 in the second.
The Chiefs posted their fifth straight victory while improving to 8-2-1-1.
The loss ended Vancouver’s winning streak at five games.
The defending Memorial Cup champion Giants saw their record fall to 9-2-1-1 as they suffered their second setback in regulation time.
Spokane outshot the Giants 27-18 while going scoreless on two power play chances.
The Giants were blanked on four man-advantage situations.
The Chiefs held the Giants to only one shot in the last nine minutes of the game.
