Education Notebook: Literacy volunteers wanted

Spokane Public Schools is looking for volunteers to help tutor literacy.

There will be a training session held from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 and 13 at Lincoln Heights Elementary School, 3322 E. 22nd Ave.

The training sessions are offered four times a year, and volunteers must only attend one session.

Literacy coaches Jane Bouge, from Adams Elementary, and Kathy Bumgarner from Lincoln Heights, will facilitate the sessions.

GU engineer students second in competition

Calib Burk and John Gibson, engineering students at Gonzaga University, recently were awarded second place for their entry in the Student Paper Competition at the North American Power Symposium in Las Cruces, N.M.

The paper, “Electric Secondary Distribution System Design” is based on a senior design project the students worked on for Avista Utilities and Gonzaga’s Center for Engineering Design.

Their adviser is Juan Bala Jr.
