Conference honors Whitworth duo

The Northwest Conference honored a pair of Whitworth Pirates football players on Monday.

Strong safety Jay Tully was named the conference’s defensive player of the week after his 18-tackle effort in a 20-17 overtime win over Willamette. Placekicker/wide receiver Andy Largent earned special teams player of the week after kicking two field goals, including the game-winner in OT.

•The Spokane Shock announced that Matt Sauk has been hired as assistant head coach.

Sauk is a former af2 and AFL quarterback. He was the af2’s offensive player of the year while with the Louisville Fire. He holds league records with 17,142 yards passing and 345 touchdown passes.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Washington University freshman Jessica Blessard was named the Big Sky Conference co-defensive player of the week.

Blessard made 11 saves in a 1-0 loss to Weber State and made four saves in a 1-0 win over Idaho State. It was her first career shutout.

Prep volleyball

Shelby Puckett had 16 kills and five blocks and Desiree Chappell added 14 kills to lead Tekoa-Oakesdale to a 25-11, 27-25, 25-23 win over Garfield-Palouse at the Whitman County League playoffs in Rosalia.

T-O earns the league’s top seed to district in Pomeroy and will play WCL No. 5 Colton at 3:30 p.m.. Gar-Pal earns the WCL’s No. 2 seed and plays Blue Mountain League’s No. 3 seed at 5.

Rosalia comes out of the WCL as the No. 3 seed after losing to Gar-Pal in the opening match 17-25, 14-25, 25-15, 24-26. Rosalia will play the BML No. 2 seed at 3:30.

LaCrosse-Washtucna beat Sprague-Harrington 25-7, 25-13, 25-10 in a loser-out match and then knocked off Colton 25-8, 25-15, 25-22 to earn the No. 4 seed. L-W will play the BML No. 1 seed at 5 p.m. In the other match, Colton defeated St. John-Endicott 26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 25-16.

•Pullman beat West Valley 25-18, 25-22 in Great Northern League tiebreaker matches in Cheney to earn the No. 1 seed to district. West Valley enters district as the second seed.

In the first match, Medical Lake beat Clarkston 25-23, 29-27 in a loser-out game for No. 6 seed. WV beat Colville 25-20, 25-22 and Pullman beat Colville 25-21, 25-23. Colville is the No. 3 seed.

On Wednesday at West Valley, ML plays Colville in a loser-out match at 5 p.m. The winner plays WV at 7 p.m. At Pullman, Deer Park and Riverside play a loser-out match at 5 with the winner taking on Pullman at 7.
