Cougars topple Montana State

Brittany Johnson had a game-high 14 kills and Jackie Albright and Tara West added 13 each as Washington State beat host Montana State 30-23, 30-28, 30-28 in a non-conference volleyball match Friday in Bozeman, Mont.

Maureen Perez dished out 43 assists for the Cougars, who improved to 6-0 on the season. MSU fell to 0-5.

•Washington remained undefeated with a 30-23, 30-13, 30-21 win over host Gonzaga (2-3). Becky Perry led the Huskies (4-0) with 13 kills and Christal Morrison and Jessica Swarbrick each added 12.

•Hayley Hills had 22 kills and Amanda Yausie added 51 assists as Eastern Washington University rallied from two games back to beat host Colgate (2-2) 25-30, 23-30, 30-18, 30-19, 15-10 at San Francisco for its first win of the season.

Yausie and Allison Reinstein each had four aces for the Eagles (1-3).

•Whitworth won its first match 30-23, 30-8, 30-19 before falling to Whitman 30-26 32-30, 30-26 in their second game at the Las Vegas Blast Tournament.

Men’s soccer

Adrian Burgess scored in the 86th minute to lead UC Irvine to a 1-0 win over visiting Gonzaga in both teams’ season opener.

Women’s soccer

Mallory Fox and Brooke Bemis scored second-half goals to lead Washington State (1-0) to a 2-1 win over Montana (0-1) in non-conference play in Missoula.

•Idaho scored two second-half goals and beat host Gonzaga 2-0 in the non-conference season opener for both teams.

•Freshman Emily Rohde scored a pair of second-half goals to help Whitworth top Texas Lutheran University 6-0 in a non-conference opener in San Antonio.
