Wolverines’ Henne out against Irish

Injured Michigan quarterback Chad Henne will not play against Notre Dame on Saturday.

Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr did not provide a timetable for Henne’s return, listing him Monday as week-to-week. The senior was knocked out of the second half of Saturday’s 39-7 loss to Oregon.

Freshman Ryan Mallett will start against the Fighting Irish on Saturday at home in a matchup of storied teams struggling with 0-2 records.

•Louisville safety Latarrius Thomas will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

• Kansas State linebacker Antwon Moore is out for the season with an undisclosed injury.

•Pitt defensive tackle Gus Mustakas will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

•Antonio Taylor, Utah State’s leading tackler, was suspended for the season for a violation of team rules – ending his career with the Aggies.

Basketball

Sixers, Nuggets trade

The Denver Nuggets sent forward Reggie Evans and the draft rights to forward Ricky Sanchez to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for swingman Steven Hunter and forward Bobby Jones.

The Sixers also agreed to terms with free agent Calvin Booth.

•The New Jersey Nets signed free agent forward Malik Allen.

•Former Cleveland Cavaliers owner Ted Stepien died Monday at his home in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. He was 82.

Tennis

U.S. Open ratings down

The overnight TV ratings for both U.S. Open singles finals dropped from last year.

The men’s final, in which Roger Federer beat Novak Djokovic, drew a 4.2 overnight rating on CBS on Sunday, down from a 5.1 for Federer against Andy Roddick in 2006.

The women’s final, in which Justine Henin defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova, got a 2.6 overnight rating on CBS on Saturday night. That’s a decline from the 3.2 CBS got in 2006.

•Venus Williams climbed five spots to No. 9 in the rankings, meaning she and her sister, No. 7 Serena, are both in the top 10 for the first time in nearly two years.

The Italian Olympic Committee’s anti-doping prosecutor has indicated he may open an investigation into a genetic therapy being used to treat the injured thigh of AC Milan forward Ronaldo.

•Sterling Marlin, Joe Nemechek and two crew chiefs have filed breach of contract suits against Ginn Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc.

•Former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has postponed his planned comeback against Jameel McCline after undergoing an emergency back operation.
