Area roundup: Eastern sweeps Montana State

Hayley Hills, Alysha Cook and Chenoa Coviare combined for 39 kills as Eastern Washington (3-9, 2-1) posted a 3-0 sweep of Montana State (1-13, 0-3) in Big Sky Conference play on Thursday at Bozeman.

Cook had the winning kill in the first game. EWU tore to a 9-3 lead in the second game, and broke from a 20-all tie to win the third game.

Mandy Daniels had 23 digs, the most by an EWU player in a three-game match since Andrea Verdoljak’s 24 on Oct. 27, 2005.

“Idaho scored the final three points of the match, punctuated by Sarah Conwell’s 19th kill, to defeat Nevada 30-28, 26-30, 30-23, 26-30, 21-19 in Western Athletic Conference volleyball play at Moscow, Idaho.

Haley Larsen had a match-high 29 kills and Kelsey James added 63 assists and 22 digs for the Vandals (4-8, 1-1). Teal Ericson led the Wolf Pack (4-6, 1-2) with 24 kills.

Women’s basketball

Gonzaga’s 2007-08 schedule will include defending national champion Tennessee and Elite Eight teams Arizona State and Purdue, the school announced.

The Bulldogs, defending West Coast Conference tournament champions, will open their season with four home games – Washington (Nov. 12), Nevada (Nov. 17), Montana (Nov. 19) and Marquette (Nov. 23).

GU’s conference opener will be Jan. 10 at home against Pepperdine.

Football

The Arkansas Twisters of arenafootball2 hired former Spokane Shock coach Chris Siegfried as their head coach.

Siegfried, who led the Shock to the 2006 ArenaCup championship, spent this season as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League.
