In brief: ‘Rabbit’ auditions scheduled

Spokane Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for the holiday musical, “The Velveteen Rabbit,” on Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 6 p.m. at St. Aloysius School, 611 E Mission Ave. Callbacks will be Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Director Heidi Ritz-Stephens is looking for 30 boys and girls ages 10 to adult. Auditioners should bring sheet music to sing a one-minute song and dress comfortably for movement auditions.

The Velveteen Rabbit” will be performed Nov. 23-Dec. 15.

Valleyford

Chip, compost event planned

The annual chipping and composting event will be Oct. 6 and 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Spokane County Fire District 8, Station 2, 12100 E. Palouse Highway, Valleyford.

The event will include ongoing seminars about backyard composting, information about outdoor burning programs in Spokane County, and information about protecting homes from wildfires.

Residents can dispose of illegal burn barrels and trade them in for a plastic compost bin. There also will be free chipping and disposal of clean vegetation.

Open house Sunday at Girl Scouts site

The Girl Scout Program Center, 1404 N. Ash St., will present an open house Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The facility includes a gymnasium for volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer and rock climbing, fitness equipment and yoga, a teaching kitchen, computer lab and arts and crafts room.

Registered Girl Scouts can use the facility for free. Registration is $10 a year for girls ages 5 through 17.

Free yoga class scheduled

A free yoga class is being offered at the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt St., starting on Oct. 16. The class will teach basic yoga and will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for eight weeks. Participants are asked to arrive at 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 16 to provide time for signing up. High Bridge Park

River Cleanup planned Oct. 6

The Friends of the Falls, Kendall Yards, Avista Utilities and Washington Trust Bank will present the fifth annual River Cleanup Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting at High Bridge Park.

The event is in need of team leaders to attend an orientation and training session on Oct. 5 to lead groups of 30 volunteers in cleaning up litter and trash.

Since there is limited parking at High Bridge, volunteers should walk, bike or take the bus to the event. A Spoknae Transit Authority bus will travel from Spokane Falls Community College to the park every 15 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m.

The first 200 volunteers to arrive by bus will win a free backpack from Thomas Hammer.

The cleanup will take place between Peaceful Valley and the T.J. Meenach Bridge. Volunteers should dress appropriately and bring work gloves to protect their hands.

At noon there will be a celebration that will include food vendors, music and prizes for the most interesting trash collected.

In Touch open house Wednesday

The Sacred Heart Women’s Health Center is offering a free open house of In Touch Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include information about infant massage and parenting classes, snacks and drawings for a free massage, free classes or a gift certificate to Journey’s Boutique.

The open house will be in the Peaceful Place Classroom of Sacred Heart’s Women’s Health Center, 101 W. Eighth Ave.

Chase panel offers positions

The Chase Youth Commission Teen Advisory Council is reorganizing for the new school year, and it began the new term with 100 positions available for students countywide.

The council works on several youth-oriented projects, including the annual Chase Youth Awards, BOBfest and the Youth Issues Voice Forum.

Teen pageant opens applications

The Miss Spokane’s Outstanding Teen committee is now accepting applications for its pageant in 2008.

Teen girls 13 to 17 years old may apply. The applicants also must be single, never married and no more than a junior in high school in Spokane County.

Winners of the pageant will receive scholarship money and make public appearances.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, and the entry fee is $150.

Y’s Family Walk will be Saturday

The YMCA of the Inland Northwest will present the Y to Y Family Walk Saturday at 8 a.m.

Walkers can start at either the Valley YMCA or Downtown YMCA and walk the 12.8 miles along the Centennial Trail.

There will be eight legs to the walk, from 1 mile to 2 1/2 two miles, and there will be water and rest stops along the way.

To celebrate the walk, there will be a reception at the Valley YMCA from noon to 3 p.m. A shuttle will be available to take walkers back to the Valley from downtown.

Preservation grants offered

The Spokane Preservation Advocates organization is seeking applications from potential recipients of its annual grant program.

The group has capital improvement grants of up to $5,000 that may be awarded as a match for an equivalent amount of money for the project. Also, SPA offers a minigrant of up to $1,000 that requires no match for projects or educational programs.

The SPA Heritage Fund has awarded more than $60,000 in grants in the past six years from money obtained through fund-raising activities and donations.
