Business owner appearing on ‘Today’

The Spokesman-Review

Rathdrum’s most famous woman entrepreneur, Juanita Carmack, owner of Taco Chic Salsa, will soon appear on NBC’s “Today Show,” after a crew films production of her all-natural salsa at her West Main Street factory on Tuesday.

National attention began when Carmack was picked as one of Country Living magazine’s 10 Women Entrepreneurs of 2008. Once her story hit the streets in the March issue, producers with national ties began calling.

She managed to fit an invitation to appear on a short segment of TV’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch,” into her schedule before she flew to Chicago where she was an honored guest of Country Living for a “Celebration of Creativity,” an event celebrating women “who bank on their bliss.” During the event organized to “inspire, inform and entertain,” Carmack shared her advice and passion for her business as a member of the Entrepreneurs Panel Discussion. More than 600 women entrepreneurs from 40 states attended the event.

Shortly after her return home, a producer from NBC’s “Today Show” called. Following a couple weeks spent figuring out logistics, a “Today Show” production team is scheduled to arrive in Rathdrum on Tuesday to tape a segment for later broadcast. According to Carmack, producers want to film the small salsa factory in full production. It normally takes a full day for Carmack and her only full-time employee, Shelley Love, to produce a batch of salsa. To speed up production for the film crew, both her husband John and her mother-in-law will be on hand to help.

Excitement has grown throughout the area as word spread of the arrival of a national TV crew. Once informed, city officials put plans into place to cordon off the building and keep traffic flowing on Main Street during the time the crew is filming.

The Salsa Factory, featuring Taco Chic Salsa, tamales, and enchiladas made with all-natural ingredients, is at 8016 W. Main Street in Rathdrum. Call 687-2464 for more information.
