Lectures, workshops at area churches

Now that Easter has come and gone, churches have slowed down their activities, but some are presenting lectures, workshops and speakers.

Spiritus, a center for spirituality sponsored by the Diocese of Spokane and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will present “Fighting with the Bible,” Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop will be led by Donn Morgan, president and dean of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific and a professor of the Old Testament. He will discuss the topics in his new book, “Fighting with the Bible: Why Scripture Divides Us and How It Can Bring Us Together.”

The cost to attend is $20 and includes lunch.

There will be copies of Morgan’s book available at the workshop, or they can be ordered online through Church Publishing, www.churchpublishing.org.

In addition to the workshop, Morgan will lead an adult forum and preach at the Cathedral on Sunday.

•Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya, will present George Baldwin, author of “A Political Reading of the Life of Jesus,” Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Baldwin will discuss his book at this event that is also a potluck dinner.

•Life Center Church, 1202 N. Government Way, will present GriefShare, an 11-week, video, Bible-based class and support group which features experts on grief and recovery.

The nondenominational series will discuss topics to help grieve the death of a loved one.

The series starts Monday at 7 p.m. in room 202 of the building. The cost is $30 to attend.

Volunteer information

Catholic Charities will offer its volunteer information session Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 100 of the Catholic Pastoral Center, 1023 W. Riverside Ave.

The organization trains volunteers for Bernadette Place, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone Program, the Christmas Bureau, counseling, the House of Charity, Parish Social Ministry, Refugee and Immigration Services, regional offices, Respect Life, St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, St. Margaret’s Shelter, Senior and Family Housing and senior services.

Concert

Spokane Valley Community of Christ, 11515 E. Broadway, will present Jan Kraybill, principal organist and director of music at the Community of Christ International Headquarters in Independence, Mo., Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The congregation of the church recently combined a North Side church and a South Side church and took up residence in Spokane Valley.

Kraybill will also present a worship workshop Sunday and participate in the 11 a.m. worship service.

Pancake breakfast

The Catholic Daughters will offer its biannual pancake breakfast Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 302 E. Boone Ave.

The cost to attend is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 through 10 and free for children younger than 5.
