Toreros bully Zags for win

Nick McCoy went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for No. 17 San Diego as it defeated Gonzaga 10-2 in a West Coast Conference baseball game Friday in San Diego.

Brian Matusz went seven innings for the Toreros (20-11, 2-2), striking out eight and allowing two unearned runs. Tyson Van Winkle was only the Bulldog (16-12, 1-2) with two hits.

•Matt Dempsey and Kyle Mihaylo each had four hits for UC Davis (19-8) to lead it past Washington State 12-5 in non-conference action in Pullman.

Garry Kuykendall went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Cougars (16-11).

•Nick Haughian threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout and struck out 15 for Washington (19-8, 2-2) as it beat No. 18 Arizona (14-9, 2-5) 1-0 in a Pac-10 Conference game at Safeco Field in Seattle. The Huskies’ Andy Lentz broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning with a RBI double.

Softball

Aleah Macon struck out nine and allowed four hits to help No. 25 Washington beat No. 23 California (32-13, 1-3) 2-1 in Pac-10 Conference action at Husky Softball Stadium.

Jace Williams led the Huskies (23-11-1, 2-2), going 1 for 2 with an RBI double.

•Salt Lake Community College (28-6-1, 20-4) used strong starting pitching from Lindsey Palmer and Erica Park to sweep North Idaho 3-2 and 4-1 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader in Salt Lake City.

Kristen Burtch went 3 for 6 with three RBIs for the Cardinals (20-17-2, 15-11-4) on the day.

•CC Spokane’s Heather Coulter struck out 15 batters, giving up no runs in a 6-0, 4-0 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges doubleheader sweep over Walla Walla (20-10, 7-3) at Spokane Falls CC.

In the first game, Whitney Dilworth of CCS (10-10, 4-4) ended the top of the fifth inning with a game-saving dive to stop a grounder up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs. She also went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Track and field

Washington State senior McKenzie Garberg qualified for the NCAA Regional final after throwing the discus an NCAA-RQ mark of 172 feet, 7 inches for third place at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at the University of Texas in Austin.

The Cougars’ men’s 4x100-meter relay team also qualified for today’s final after finishing with a time of 3 minutes, 12.36 seconds.

•Three Washington State runners and four Idaho throwers reached NCAA Regional times and received bids at the 34th annual Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.

Cougars steeplechasers Meghan Leonard (10:22.35) and Sam Ahlbeck (9:04.83), along with 5,000 runner Isley Gonzalez (16:42.91) each ran an NCAA-RQ time in their races.

Idaho senior Russ Winger (190-7) won the men’s “B” section of the discus. He is joined by three first-time qualifiers, javelin throwers Kyle Hook and Anne Barnett, and hammer thrower Gabriella Midles.

Prep baseball

Mead walked five times in the fifth, scoring three runs to pull away for an 8-4 victory over visiting Rogers (4-6) in a Greater Spokane League makeup game.

Robert Murphy went 2 for 3, scoring one run for the Panthers (7-1), who tied idle University for first place.
