GSL honors league’s top scholar-athletes

Greater Spokane League Scholar-Athlete winners, the league’s most prestigious annual award, will be recognized today during a luncheon at the Spokane Club.

Each year the GSL students who excel in the classroom, community and athletics receive rings commemorating their achievements.

One male and female student is recognized from each school.

This year’s winners are:

Central Valley – Justine Bowman, 3.5 GPA, basketball, soccer and track; Connor Janhunen, 3.82 GPA, football, basketball and track.

East Valley – Lori Bourgeous, 3.89 GPA, track and cross country; Clete Hanson, 3.66 GPA, football and wrestling.

Ferris – Nicole Barber, 4.0 GPA, basketball, track and field and cross country; Jeff Minnerly, 4.0 GPA, basketball, football, track and baseball.

Gonzaga Prep – Renee Vandermause, soccer and basketball, 3.9 GPA; Aaron Page, football and baseball, 3.76 GPA,

Lewis and Clark – Brittany Kennedy, 3.7 GPA, basketball and track; Alex Shaw, 3.4 GPA, football, basketball and track.

Mead – Amanda Dahlstrom, 3.97 GPA, volleyball and track; Glen Reser, 3.7 GPA, football and baseball.

Mt. Spokane – Callie Bergstrom, 4.0 GPA, soccer and basketball; Ian Schneidmiller, 3.8 GPA, football, wrestling and track.

North Central – Elisa Romaneschi, track and basketball, 4.0 GPA; Samuel Schaefer, football, basketball and baseball, 3.6 GPA.

Rogers – Brittanie Vargo, 4.0 GPA, cross country and track; Andrew Durant, 3.8 GPA, football, basketball and baseball.

Shadle Park – Lexie Pettersen, 3.97 GPA, volleyball and basketball; Daniel Renz, 3.85 GPA, cross country and track.

University – Riki Schiermeister, 4.0 GPA, basketball and softball; Tyler Clifton, 3.76 GPA, football and track.

Track weekend

The litmus test for track athletes comes Saturday at the annual Pasco Invitational.

Events begin at 9:30 a.m. at Edgar Brown Stadium and conclude with awards at 6:40 p.m.

Top competitors from more than 100 schools will be in attendance, all attaining meet time and distance standards, with as many as 54 in an event vying for 10 spots in the finals.

Every Greater Spokane League school and all but one from the Great Northern League are among the 22 area teams represented. They have individuals among the leaders in most events.

Track – Good marks abound with hurdlers David Butler (NC), Brandon Walker (Shadle) and Nick Cassleman (Pullman) among the top five boys times, as are 400 runners Case Parker (EV) and James Theodorson (CV). GSL distance runners from NC, CV and Mead will contend. NC and CV have strong relay teams, short and long, respectively.

Sprinters Jordan Carlson and Brianne Brown (Shadle), Eleanor Siler (LC) and Kelsey Linn (Ferris), and distance runners Andrea Nelson (Shadle) and Baylee Mires (Mead) are in the girls mix, as are Shadle and Mead relay teams.

Field A.J. Maracich (Mead) in the high jump, Bo Schueltzle (Shadle) in the long jump, Evander Cobbs and William Davis (triple jump) are local athletes to watch. Davis Musson (Colville), Joe Zimmerman (LC), Wesley Nolen (U-Hi) and Justin Graff (Mead) have the best four javelin marks.

Kelly McNamee (Ferris) is the top girls high jumper and a hurdles contender. Michayla Mueller (Ferris) and Tasha Clark (Mead) are among the top three pole vaulters, and Erin Smith (Chewelah) and Brittany Kennedy (LC) are among the top three in the long jump. Katie Davis (Ferris) is a triple jump contender. Anna Albrecht (Pullman) and Ashley Kenney (WV) have the top two shot put and discus throws. Sara Nichols (Shadle) and Lindsey Snyder (Mt. Spokane) are javelin challengers.

“Cheney will host its Big Red Track Meet on the same day. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events at 10:30.
