In brief: Husband, daughter find woman’s body in lake

The Spokesman-Review

A woman reported missing Wednesday afternoon was found dead in Lake Coeur d’Alene hours later.

Joanie Dory’s husband reported her missing after she left their Hayden home early Tuesday afternoon to run errands and never returned, said Kootenai County Sheriff’s Lt. Kim Edmondson.

Frank Dory filed a missing person’s report about noon Wednesday, then went looking for his wife of more than 40 years, Edmondson said.

He and his daughter found the 67-year-old’s body in Lake Coeur d’Alene near Tony’s Supper Club on Lake Coeur d’Alene Drive about 4 p.m., Edmondson said. Her car was parked at the restaurant.

“Right now, it’s just an unfortunate drowning,” Edmondson said. “There’s nothing suspicious.”

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Frank Dory looked for his wife around the lake because it was one of her favorite places, Edmondson said.

“Her and her husband take a drive around the lake every Sunday. It’s just a place that’s real dear to her,” she said.

Two men arrested on drug charges

Two men were arrested near a Spokane high school Wednesday with marijuana and a loaded gun after allegedly trying to run from police.

Spokane police believe Timothy McMackin, 20, and Jarell Barnes, 20, may have been attempting to sell drugs during Lewis and Clark High School’s lunch period when they were arrested about 11:30 a.m. near the school, according to the Spokane Police Department.

An officer spotted the two jaywalking, but the men ran when he approached them, according to police.

Police arrested McMackin, who had marijuana and about $270 in cash on him, in a parking lot near Pacific Avenue and Washington Street, according to police. Barnes was arrested at a nearby business with two 9 mm bullets and several bags of marijuana.

Police found a loaded semiautomatic 9 mm gun under a car near where McMackin was arrested.

The two face charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Enhanced or federal charges could be brought against them because of the presence of a gun near school grounds, according to police.

Spokane County

Richard wants four more years

Spokane County Commissioner Mark Richard said Wednesday he’d like to serve four more years.

Richard, 43, is the only Republican so far to declare he’s running for his seat, which represents southeast Spokane County, including Liberty Lake, most of Spokane Valley and the eastern portion of Spokane’s South Hill.

At a speech on the grounds of the County Courthouse, Richard said he’s brought integrity to government, fought for a stronger mental health system and worked to improve the financial health of the county.

The only Democrat so far in the race is Liberty Lake City Councilman Brian Sayrs. Bill Burke, who organizes Pig Out in the Park, filed to run last year but has since said he won’t compete for the position.

Fellow GOP Commissioner Todd Mielke, who represents northern Spokane County, recently filed with the state Public Disclosure Commission his intention to begin raising money for his re-election campaign.

Former County Health Officer Dr. Kim Thorburn is running against him as a Democrat.

The deadline to file for the election is June 6. The primary is Aug. 19.
